Desperation Grows as Unemployment Benefits End
New York Times ^ | August 2, 2010 | Michael Luo

...

Ms. Jarrin is part of a hard-luck tribe of jobless whose members have taken to calling themselves “99ers,” because they have exhausted the maximum 99 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits that they can claim.

For them, the resolution recently of the lengthy Senate scrum over extending jobless benefits was no balm. The measure renewed two federal programs that extended jobless benefits in this recession beyond the traditional 26 weeks to anywhere from 60 to 99 weeks, depending on the state’s unemployment rate. But many jobless have now exceeded those limits. They are adjusting to a new, harsh reality with no income.

With long-term unemployment at record levels, about 1.4 million people were out of work for 99 weeks or more in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not all of them received unemployment benefits, but for many of those who did, the modest payments were a lifeline that enabled them to maintain at least a veneer of normalcy, keeping a roof over their heads, putting gas in their cars, paying electric and phone bills.

Without the checks, many like Ms. Jarrin, who lost her job as director of client services at a small technology company in March 2008, are beginning to tumble over the economic cliff. For them, the last vestiges of their former working class or middle-class lives are gone; it is inescapable now that they are indigent.

Ms. Jarrin said she wept as she drove away from her old life last month, wondering if she would ever be able to reclaim it.

...

Nevertheless, the political appetite to help people like Ms. Jarrin appears limited.

...

She says none of her three adult sons are in a position to help her.

And get rid of AA, disallow frivolous lawsuits, stop bashing ‘big business’ and start actually punishing criminals.

Not one of her 3 sons has a couch that mom can sleep on?

You could lower the minimum wage $1.50 today, and it's not going to fix this economic disaster.

You are so right.. China and India will still pay less.

Maybe when there is no more consumers here that can afford even the cheap imports companies will realize it was a short term gain to save a few bucks in the 3rd world has a large cost

Maybe one is in prison, one is homeless, and one is far away living in a mobile home without a phone?

Also there is the possibility that one of the sons is successful and has a happy home with a wife and kid(s) and thaT letting Mom stay may cause a lot of problems.

something I do not see mentioned as a possibility in these situations is that unfortunately the family member needing help may not be too easy to live with. Especially if Mom wants the other bum kids to move in with her. Or if she is an alcoholic Bipolar Manic depressive personality or some other type that gets out of control from time to time.

Of course, the three sons could all be bums without a place of their own and Mom spent all of her money trying to help them, and is now going to be broke and homeless herself. I think that's pretty likely.

It is kind of sad to think that she raised three sons and not one can help her in her time of need.

If I were faced with her situation, I’d be spending my last $260 on printing up house cleaning and yard work fliers and passing them out door to door personally

lol...the illegals had that sewn up long ago...You're not going to beat their low, illegal pay...If you do, you'll be living in the streets without money for little things like cars, rent, and auto insurance etc....

Good luck with that.

In 99 weeks she could have found some kind of job even if it was working for Molly Maid.

Yeah, but here's the thing: Her unemployment paid much better than working at Molly Maid.

If she would have lost her job at Molly Maid, she would have gotten the unemployment based on that job.

I don't blame these people for taking unemployment. The jobs simply aren't there. Employers are not hiring unemployed.

These people haven't a clue...Their living in the 1950s, or their all on government pensions, desperate for tax payers.

But, I would be the first to tell them to send their 19 year old daughters to go to work at burger king or chicken licken to work alongside the half drunk 41 year old illegal alien males...

The woman who cleans my house is not an illegal. Not even hispanic. She charges me $100 for 5 hours. She cleans at least 1, often times 2 houses a day. I think that is better than unemployment. She works her butt off and does a very good job. I think there are a lot of people who would pay more to actually be able to speak to and trust the people that are in their home.

Of course I'm right...Some of these people here are living way in the past...

They still think, "Work hard and prosper".....

I hate to be blunt, but them days are gone for the most part....

Nowadays, your lucky to *keep* your job if ya still have one, regardless how freaking hard one works....

Sad, but true.

You pay someone $20 a freaking hour to clean your house? Does that come with medical benefits?

LOL!

What do ya pay your plumber, $200 per hour?

I’ve been expecting an increase in crime, but my theory is that most of these people who have been out of work for months and months aren’t the type who turn criminal. When my husband’s electrical business was floundering, he got discouraged, but nothing in a million years would have caused him to start burglarizing homes or holding up convenience stores. Most of these people just get more and more desperate, quietly. They sell off everything they can, cash in everything they can, and wake up each morning hoping for a miracle.

Eventually they will have cashed in every chip, borrowed all they can and slept on every couch that would have them and a miracle still won't arrive in the morning. What then? You can bet these folks won't just quietly starve to death. They'll find some way, any way, to put food in their bellies. That's when we're going to be in big trouble.

First you complain that illegals undercut Americans, then you complain that I pay my house cleaner, who is not illegal, too much. Some people are never happy.

As for the plumber, if I need a plumber I will pay him what he charges. Plumbing is very important to me.

Funny, people call me cheap, I guess they haven’t met you yet.

“But there needs to be shelter system so that people don’t starve or freeze.”

The Siren call of Siren calls.

Why do you think they are allowing/helping this to happen? Just so you, and many like you, will spout this nonsense.

THEY NEED TO GET THE F$$$ OUT OF THE WAY SO AMERICANS CAN CREATE THEIR OWN SHELTER AND WARMTH.

Wake up and smell the subversion!

There’s something very strange about a person working and also at her age going to school in NYC, losing a job, then moving to TN, giving up and then moving to VT. The article doesn’t say that she did any of this moving because of the prospects of a job....just moved on. Why not stay in one place? She has a car and can look for work by just driving around. She obviously isn’t accomplishing anything by staying in a motel and sending out resumes. She has three sons that are not in a position to help her? I would say she probably hasn’t been a responsible person as far as her sons are concerned. There are some people who just don’t settle down and think if they’re roaming, they are accomplishing something. Kinda like the man in the WH - because he’s talking, he thinks he’s accomplishing something.

I think everyone here can feel for this woman but I think I would stay in one place if I were her. It costs $$$$ she doesn’t have to move around the country and stay in motels without any prospects for work whatsoever. Why is there no one in her life who will do anything for her other than send her some unexpected $$$$? No friends/relatives with an extra bedroom willing to lend a hand for awhile?

I’m perplexed....

I have never seen so many Americans so hateful of tens of millions of other Americans who have been economically gang raped by this meat grinding economy...

Ten of millions have lost their businesses, jobs, careers, investments, savings, retirements, and the very roofs over their heads...

These threads are beyond believe...full of dip sh*ts that believe most Americans are nothing but lazy no good couch hounds....

What do you think all these millions of Americans were doing just 4 or so years ago? Oh, that's right, they were like everyone else, paying their bills and working hard...

Ya think 20 plus million Americans suddenly became lazy?

Gezzzz...

Ya think I'm kidding you?

then you complain that I pay my house cleaner, who is not illegal, too much.

You're the guy paying someone $20 per hour to clean your freaking house. No offense, but you need to have your head examined.

What I'm tell you professor, is in most regions of the U.S., the illegals have taken over the house cleaning industry, along with many other services industries and they don't get $20.00 per hour to dust and vacuum....lol

She is in a rough situation and she probably can’t fix it alone. God and a good church could help.

My church is stretched. We help our own needy members first and there is some help for others but not much. My Pastor tells me that he gets calls almost every day requesting food. He has to tell them no and adds that we have to take care of our own members first.

If this woman attends church regularly she'd be more likely to get help.

I think the problem is the resentment that those who work hard read about those who refuse to take jobs because it would affect their unemployment benefits.

You can use any job to be a springboard to something bigger and better. You can’t use unemployment as a springboard to anything.
