She slandered him to his co-pilot and his employer.
You don’t understand the law of defamation. It requires more than merely saying something that is wrong and harmful.

“What the Pilot should have done is come back to her seat
shook her hand and said Well Done. Had he done that, this
would not even be a story.”
Exactly. She now is the one that can sue the airline and Delta Airlines takes a hit. People will only remember that Delta had a drunk pilot and tried to shut a person up for saying so, even if the pilot was not drunk the story will still be remembered that way.

This report lacks a fundamental detail, these ladies were talking to this man and they have nothing to report on him besides a suspicion of smell. Clueless housewives, with little or no barstool exp. acting as the 'alcohol police' is whats wrong with this story.
Behaviour along with strong suspicion, not suspicion of smell alone, would lead me to make such a report.

No, but you are way off on the prospects for a defamation action. Ask any qualified lawyer.

“I believe I smelled alcohol on one of the pilots’ breath,””
That is not slander.
“The pilot is a drunk”, would be slander.

Accusing an airline pilot of drinking REQUIRES a test, and guarantees a significant delay. There are NUMEROUS other opportunities to catch offenders. When passengers start doing this on their own. you can kiss goodbye ever arriving at your destination. It is the equivalent to saying the wood “bomb.”

She said she was satisfied with the First Officer’s explanation. At that point it’s over. This is just jackbooted thuggery. Next time it might be you.

I got a cousin like that. I don’t know how her husband can live with her. Oh that’s right he don’t, he keeps an apartment 250 miles away in Houston.

He could have been drinking the night before and that is what she smelled.

There is no end to the stunts she will pull, and they come out of the blue.
But in her mind she is the fairy white princess on her winged horse, the benevolent dictator.

Be more than happy to. I am a pilot and wouldn’t hesitate to call the local FAA FSDO and Sheriff’s office, who does have authority in the matter.

I've been an airline pilot for 29 years. Attitudes like yours would bring passenger service to a screeching halt.
As this women discovered, we take accusations like hers very seriously. I know of no airline pilot that would continue the trip if accused of having alcohol on his breath. Open your smart mouth, and you won't be proceding to your destination.
Airline pilots are the most closely regulated profession in the U.S. We are randomly checked for alchohol and drugs, as well as checked every 6 months. Unlike the medical profession, we also do a remarkable job of self-policing with professional standards units at every major airline.
