Land of 10,000 lakes, and 1 official language?

Gov. Tim Pawlenty waded into the national debate over immigration Tuesday, saying that Minnesota should consider making English its official state language.

Such a measure could spare governments translation costs, but impose a new level of difficulty on the state's immigrant population.

At a news conference outside the governor's residence, Pawlenty said that as the country becomes more diverse, some people might question which language to use in official documents. He said it might be helpful to clarify that the official language is English.

Spokesman Bruce Gordon said Pawlenty made the comments when asked about his support for so-called English-only measures, such as one recently approved in the northern suburb of Lino Lakes. Pawlenty's comments came shortly after a meeting with Chilean ambassador Arturo Fermandois. The two talked about investment partnerships between Minnesota and Chile, including a northeastern Minnesota mining venture involving Chilean companies.

We are driving to Grand Rapids in Itasca County on Saturday. I will be engaging in my favorite Minnesota game while we are there; trying to find just one person outside of the Cities that really voted for Franken..

If the "enlightened" and permantly pompous French can have an official language - French per the French constitution (article II) is the official language of France - then why can't the US?

There is NOT A SINGLE legitimate reason why the US prints any document that deals with a privilege of citizenship (like an election ballot, or passport applications) in any language other than English.

And last time I heard, Spanish was Chile's official language. Why do you think certain groups are trying to impose Spanish on the United States, and insist we teach their children in that language? "Para engles, oprima numero dos."

English only laws are best, as it forces those who wish to live here to be conversant in law as well as everyday usage. It would also save a great deal of money on translation services. When my great grandparents landed here, it was neighborhood associations that helped them learn english and navigate through society.

Also ask them if they remember who was in Time magazine’s 2006 list of the 5 worst Senators.

{Hint: He’s running for governor)

The non-English speaking side of my family had to learn English after they got off the boat.

It only makes sense for all of America to speak one language.

Al Franken doesn't speak English and he got elected (sort of). He speaks gibberish.

"...Minnesota should consider making English its official state language"
"...it might be helpful to clarify that the official language is English"

Are these Pawlenty's actual words, or is the writer intentionally trying to make him sound like an absolute wimp? If he truly is that big a wuss, we don't need him running for president...'cause we've got enough wimpy Pubbies running the show already.

I see no quote marks in the article, so I’m led to believe that this may be reporter-speak......
