Huckabee gives late support to Deal
Politico ^ | 8/5/10 | Jessica

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is throwing his support to former Rep. Nathan Deal’s campaign for governor of Georgia on Thursday, just five days before the Republican runoff primary that pits Deal against former Secretary of State Karen Handel.

The endorsement puts Huckabee at odds with two other potential presidential candidates — former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — who have endorsed Handel, and places him in the same company as former House Speaker and Deal endorser Newt Gingrich.

Deal spokesman Brian Robinson predicted that Huckabee, who won Georgia’s presidential primary in 2008, would help boost Deal among grassroots conservatives.

“It’s huge. He’s just got so much credibility with Georgia conservatives, and that’s who’s going to show up at the polls,” Robinson told POLITICO.

Nathan Deal was a Democrat during his tenure in the Georgia State Senate and during his first 2 Congressional terms. He switched to the Republican party after the 1994 election.

What’s Huck Spin’s Win-Loss record on 2010 endorsements?

CREW is not an objective source! Its staff is a collection of leftists with union, nonprofit, advocacy and Congressional staff (Dem, of course) backgrounds. CREW leadership bios are here:
http://www.citizensforethics.org/about/staff

This is a left-wing smear of Nathan Deal, who has represented Georgia's most Conservative district since 1993, and has one of the most Conservative voting records (100% ACU; 97% ACU Lifetime) of anyone.

My Congressman is Lynn Westmoreland, a great Conservative and a close friend and supporter of Nathan Deal -- and someone I have known for many years. Here is what Lynn's wife, Joan Westmoreland, has to say about Karen Handel's trashing of Nathan Deal:

"Although I appreciate the enthusiasm for conservative ideas that Sarah Palin has been spreading across this country, I think she’s made a mistake here.

"Alaska is a far cry from Georgia and I’m pretty sure Ms. Palin can’t smell our peaches from her front porch. This is not just about who wears lipstick, it’s about who will govern this state with integrity and conviction.

"Sarah Palin doesn’t even know Nathan Deal, but my husband Lynn and I do!!! He is a kind, honest and generous Christian man. Like my husband Lynn, he was one of the most dependable votes in the House of Representatives for our conservative values. He is a staunch defender of the sanctity of life, and he’s endorsed by Georgia Right to Life.

"I am appalled that Karen Handel would smear the name of a man who has served his nation and his state honorably for his entire life, and that is why I had to speak out today. I care about conservative values and I care about this great state, and I know that Nathan Deal is the only choice to lead the State if Georgia."

Is it a win or a loss to get a retarded RINO like Perry, McCain or Carly elected?

I know. I didn’t vote for him the first time around because he was a Democrat. But I followed his career, and he was a better conservative than most ‘Pubbies for those terms and changed sides to better represent his constituents (and ride the tide of change!).
Hell, Strom Thurman was once a Democrat. Did you have a problem with him?

Thanks, but anything that Huckabee has a hand in raises a red flag for me. I also wonder why Deal resigned when he did.

And I was gonna vote for him. Voted for him the primary. He’s been my representative for years. Karen Handel it is. Thank you Huck for making the choice clear(er).

In this case, Huckabee got it right -- and I am no fan of Huckabee!

Karen Handel's only tactic is to accuse her opponents of corruption. The allegations against Nathan Deal are purely political, and designed to destroy one of the the most conservative members of Congress.

Other than the fact that she is a woman, just who is this Karen Handel?
- Karen Handel is NOT endorsed by the National Rifle Association
- Karen Handel is NOT endorsed by Georgia Right to Life
- Karen Handel is the only candidate who refused to participate in the GOP Gubernatorial Debate (I wonder why?)
- Karen Handel denied contributing to Log Cabin Republicans -- until a copy of her handwritten dues check surfaced. (I think we call that a lie.)
- Karen Handel voted as a Fulton County Commissioner to give a large grant to Planned Parenthood.

If Sarah Palin was looking for a Conservative candidate other than Nathan Deal, she could have supported Eric Johnson -- who barely missed the runoff. But backing a woman was more important to Sarah than backing a Conservative -- so she endorsed the lease conservative candidate in the race.

Karen Handel represents the abandonment of core Conservative issues by the Georgia GOP. Once those issues are lost to the socially-liberal "County Club Republicans," we will not get them back. Thank you, Sarah Palin.

Like I have any faith in an “Office of Congressional Ethics.” They are probably upset because his isn’t crooked enough.

Tell me that you wouldn’t go after people in the state legislature and government to protect your business. The only difference is the access (and knowledge of the process) that gives Deal an advantage.

Mitt Romney endorsed Karen Handel; does that raise any flags? All but one member of Georgia's GOP Congressional delegation supports Nathan Deal; that exception is Tom Price, who recently switched to Handel.

Deal resigned from Congress in order to run for governor. I was introduced to him by Rep. Lynn Westmoreland shortly after he announced his candidacy and his resignation, which he delayed until after the Obamacare vote.

I know you’ve been on FR for many years, and you’re a Marine. I respect that enormously. Thanks for a courteous discussion, but I’m going to bow out now, since I don’t have a dog in this race.

I will however, continue to detest Huckabee.

Trisham, I don't expect someone who lives in Massachusetts to know very much about the people involved in this race. But I would expect you to consider the source and timing of the allegations against Nathan Deal. This is a political hit -- aimed at one of the most reliably Conservative politicians around. If this smear works, expect much more of the same from the leftists at CREW...

“Mitt Romney endorsed Karen Handel; does that raise any flags?”

It simply means Chicken Little sees Handel ahead in the primary and ahead in the polls and wants to be part of her victory. It’s much like his endorsement of Susanna Martinez, the day after she won the NM primary.
