Metro plans to put bullhorns in rail stations and improve crowd-management techniques after rush-hour escalator breakdowns at Dupont Circle Station last week left hordes of customers struggling up broken, 130-foot escalators -- with some people forced to crawl over the handrail to avoid falling into a hole.
Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn told Metro's board of directors at a meeting Thursday that an investigation into the incident, which started with a report of smoke at the Q Street NW entrance, determined that there were failures in radio communications and that for a short time the station's only open entrance was left unmanned.
A large crowd trying to get out of the smoky station formed at the bottom of the 19th Street escalators, which also weren't working. Some people removed a barricade to get out more quickly -- only to find an impassable and dangerous gap at the top, Taborn said.
Metro police had found that they could not communicate well because of radio "dead spots" at Dupont Circle Station, and so police need to consider using alternatives such as cellphones and "runners,"

And I was going to say they can not even keep the capital city in good running order and they want to run our lives.
Taborn said Metro will supply stations with bullhorns to aid in crowd management...
So, in addition to melting and being unable to escape, passengers will be bellowed at with bullhorns.
Isn’t Dupont Circle famous for “after hours” gay gatherings?
(Kal Pen-allegedly “gay”- was robbed of his cell phone there, not long after being offered a position by the “Won” in the administration....soon after the incident, he turned down the offer. Cell phone probably had “contact” numbers in it......wonder who “robbed” him....hmmmmmm.)
The comments on that article are hysterically funny. Everybody, everybody, is very bitter. Because we have all BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.
I just love public housing slum type transit.
“Why stop at bullhorns?
Supply all station masters with bugles, bagpipes, and vuvuzelas ...”
I loved that one. Let’s make it extra-super-hellish rather than just hellish. Maybe big ol’ bull whips to drive passengers in the approved direction. Or water cannon.
Another nice one.
That station opened in the 1970s, how had Metro PD not known by now that their radios don’t work there?
I know. And, since the system has been around for 40 years or so, you would think they might have caught on about replacement and maintenance by now.
Where is the investigation of the money taken from the parking lots?
This is not going to end well.
Nothing in Washington, DC ever ends well. And the people here want to dictate every aspect of life in the entire country.
‘+you would think they might have caught on about replacement and maintenance by now.’
Replacement, maintenance? In a public transit system? A weird sense of humor there.
