WaPo's Ruth Marcus: Unfair attacks on Michelle Obama's Spanish vacation
Washington Post ^ | August 6, 2010 | Ruth Marcus

Let's stipulate: A five-star resort on the Spanish Costa del Sol was probably not the first choice of White House spin-meisters for a mother-daughter getaway. Especially when the getaway included a posse of 40 friends of the first lady staying at the Hotel Villa Padierna, where rooms start at $330 a night, and photos of Michelle Obama strolling in Marbella wearing an off-the-shoulder number by Jean Paul Gaultier.

"The first lady is on a private trip," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip. And I think I'd leave it at that."

He wishes.

Technically, the first lady may be a private citizen. In actuality, she isn't. She can't be; see, for example, the Secret Service contingent that accompanies her, private trip or not private trip. This is a simple fact of modern presidential family life.

So as a political matter, the trip to Spain was not a good idea. You don't need Dick Morris -- who famously polled the Clintons' vacation plans and pushed Jackson Hole over Martha's Vineyard -- to tell you it's not going to play well at a time of 9.5 percent unemployment.

“George W. Bush made 77 visits to his ranch” Yo Ugly that is 9.6 trips a year. Now stop defending the hateful Broette.

No. Not Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette, whatever her personal faults, was legitimate nobility. These clowns are a bit of accidental flotsam and jetsam cast up by some sort of electoral spasm. The better analogy is with post Civil War Reconstruction.

Not to mention Bush was President of the United States, as opposed to Lady MacBeth.

As a man, in my opinion, the only things more repulsive would be her bush, husband’s junk or either one of their bare behinds.

"She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip.

Herr Gibbs needs to understand that a "private" trip would mean she was paying for her own vacation. But this vacation is funded with taxpayer dollars. That removes it from the realm of "private" and places it squarely in the realm of "public."

When Sarah Palin said Obama has no cojones last weekend, South America had a big laugh over that in their press and TV. Like it takes a woman to say that instead another man.

It's a different civilization in SA than here. They know what's going on. Read their papers on the net. Spanish isn't hard to read. Portuguese is a bit harder for me.

Someone on another blog described Michelle as ‘Patrick Ewing in designer duds’. Mean, but funny.

They own Crawford and Kinnebunkport...the Obamas own a property in Chicago sold to them in a sweetheard deal by a convicted felon, Tony Rezko...Valerie Jarrett’s slumlord, government housing partner...

And I'd bet all 77 trips together cost less than this "party for 40" that MarieAntoinetteMaBelle's on.

Besides Air Force One, each trip required multiple Cargo Aircraft (C-17) to carry the Secret Service vehicles.

It was neither free nor cheap.

Rooms at Crawford Ranch are $300 a night..”

I think it’s a real hoot when the lamestream starts their rant about GW’s trips to Crawford. Probably the nightly fee for all the rooms in town totals $300. Those that were part of the press corps at the time probably hated it - not much action going on after 6 p.m. It’s just a great little Texas town which fit with GW’s style. BO vs. GW reminds me of the comparison of people with new money versus those with old money.
