Activists take donation flap to Target's doorstep

Still angry with Target Corp., the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org delivered a three-foot-high stack of petitions to Target's Minneapolis headquarters today.

"I am boycotting Target and I have with me signatures of over 240,000 people gathered by MoveOn.org who are joining me in that boycott," said Randi Reitan, an Eden Prairie mother who has become the public face of the anti-Target protests.

Target recently gave $150,000 to help conservative Republican Tom Emmer in the Minnesota governor's race. That has fueled a controversy about whether Emmer's anti-gay-rights record fit with Target's inclusive image, and whether corporations should donate to partisan political activities.

Reitan was met by two Target officials inside the headquarters' main entrance _ but not by the man they hoped to see, Gregg Steinhafel, Target's chief executive.

Instead, Target sent a gay employee and a lesbian employee to meet the protesters _ Brad Wagner, a Target diversity consultant, and Alexis Kanter, one of the co-chairs of Target's gay and lesbian business council. The two quietly listened to Reitan's complaints, including her husband Philip Reitan's assertion that Target gave corporate money to "the most anti-gay person you can imagine."

I'd be happy to send a gift certificate for a box of kitchen matches so Target's management could merrily set fire to those petitions.

Target is going to be so nice WITHOUT that crowd around.

I think the rule is that corporations are allowed to make donations and publicly support liberal causes and politicians. They only get in trouble if they support conservative causes.

It’s an unwritten rule, but, by the reaction here, the liberals abide by this rule. These protesters would not have said anything if Target contributed to a liberal candidate or homosexual organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign.

Why aren’t these idiots complaining about the unions that support the left?

Target supports a very dives culture, Trust me! But hearing this last weekend I was extremely happy because it is an indication the corporate managers know what is coming and need to stop what is going on in the nation. Alas it is only one small step so I will hold my breath to look for more follow through of similar kind.

Our liberal friends are going to have a hard time shopping it seems.

If they don’t shop at Target, and Walmart is already anathema to them, what does it leave them? K-mart and Sears?

Their selection is going downhill in a hurry.

I don’t shop Target because they banned SA bell ringers at Christmas. I guess I will continue because of the stores rude clientele and trashy Merchandise.

Obama is a lot simpler minded than I previously thought. He uses the uneducated masses as his base and offers them money for votes. So much for his Harvard education. It comes down to buying votes no matter what the cost. What a piece of shit he is!

Target apologized for the donation to the pro-Emmer group. I’m through with them. When a corporation apologizes for doing the right thing and actively embraces doing the wrong thing, they have lost my business.
