Politics always seems to get a bit off-kilter when the temperature goes up.
So far, the summer of fear has featured a charge, led by Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and former New York congressman Rick Lazio, to block the construction of the Cordoba House Islamic cultural center a few blocks from the site of the World Trade Center. Meanwhile, with frightening speed, we've gone from discussing the prospects for comprehensive immigration reform to watching congressional Republicans call for hearings to reconsider the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to anyone born in the United States.
One of the striking things about this particular shift is how quickly it has come about. Many expected racial tension during the 2008 presidential campaign, but it barely materialized. However, as unemployment and foreclosures have increased in the years since, so have trivial, race-based controversies, such as those surrounding the New Black Panther Party and Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod.
The economic roots of our summer of fear will hopefully prove transitory, but the rise in xenophobia may nonetheless inflict serious and permanent damage. A betrayal, even a fleeting one, of America's commitment to religious freedom could do lasting harm to the country's relationship with a billion Muslims around the world. And while altering the text of the 14th Amendment would be extremely difficult, and is therefore unlikely, the shouting matches now underway still stand to permanently scar our national identity.

This hack is slamming xenophobia and says it is on the rise with the bad economy. Xenophobia is a good thing if it means you against anchor babies and a triumphant mosque at ground zero.
We need a lot more xenophobia in America and a lot less open borders and “citizen of the world” attitudes that the Obama regime epitomizes. America is for Americans especially native born Americans. He completely loses any minuscule shred of credibility when he says “14th Amendment guarantee of citizenship to anyone born in the United States”. There’s that pesky little “jurisdiction” problem.
Members of a racist hate-group standing outside of a polling place, armed with batons hurling racial epithets at white voters who are trying to exercise their right to vote is "trivial"? Somehow, I don't think this would have been so "trivial" if these guys were dressed in neo-nazi uniforms hurling anti-black racial epithets, nor would the justice department have dismissed the charges if this had been the case.
The idea that it applies to all children born here did not start until the 1970’s when Justice Brennan (I think) wrote a footnote about it in one of his opinions.
Trivial? How trivial would it have been if a couple of Klansmen stood outside a polling place in full hoods and robes carrying a noose and threatening blacks who tried to vote there? How trivial would it have been if a president known to deal with white supremecist groups instructed his attorney general to dismiss the case. Every single nightly news would headline with "Klangate - day xx".
As for the who Shirley Sherrod affair, it was clearly to show the NAACP's accusation of racism to be ridiculous when they were shown cheering for her sticking it to whitey. The administration and the press were successful in pushing the story to Sherrod, throwing her under the bus and then blaming Breitbart for the tire prints on her back.
Iglesias is not writing for Americans. He's writing for his fellow members of the Ruling Class. That he is published by the WaPo not as an example of what the Ruling Class is about, but as a serious commentary, tells me that the WaPo's audience is also the Ruling Class and Ruling Class wannabes.

Other nations, other civilizations, are not carbon copies or junior partners or differently-costumed variations of ourselves. Respecting them means recognizing that fact, taking their history, their culture and heritage, seriously.

Islam has a proud tradition of building mosques on the sacred places of lands they have conquered and dominated. They built a mosque on the Temple Mount of Jerusalem; they plastered over the magnificent mosaics of the greatest Christian church on earth, the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and added minarets; they reduced Hindu sites to ruins all over India and built on top of the rubble; they retrofitted and Islamicized the Persian holy places of Iran; and they are currently in the process of converting endless churches and synagogues into mosques all over Europe.
In their culture, that means successful invasion. It means effective occupation. It means triumph.
A super-mosque at Ground Zero? Can you not open your eyes and see what that signifies?
Or do you make the truly culturally narrow assumption that Muslims are just like whitebread Americans, except with pita: tolerant, multi-culti, humanists in quirky headgear?
Do you think "Shari'a" is Arabic of "Equal Justice Under Law"? Or that dhimmi means "brother"? Is this the Harvard ninny parochial assumption concerning Muslims, that they are --- this is so foolish--- liberals like you?
