Its unsustainable because its going to “balloon” by $12B in 10 years? Considering the untold hundreds of billions spent on ineffective bailouts, the military retirement system is a relative bargain.

Dear Congress,
Don't even think about it...

This is why in an earlier article here people were wondering why they are getting rid of so many in the military that are just short of their pensions.

Let’s take the attention away from real culpret, the public employees retirement system. Or, if your going to gut one system, by all means let’s be democratic about it and gut the other while we’re at it.

The military retirement is, or should be sustainable with the commitment to maintain adequate funding. IMO the retirement benefits are inadequate to sustain a retiree for the remainder of his or her life. I know of no one who retired from the military after 20 years of service, who can live solely on his retirement income.

The duty of our elected officials is to ensure that adequate funding is available to service and honor our retired military.

Considering Congress is stretching the military as never before with two wars and continuous lengthy deployments I suggest now is not a good time to talk about messing with the benefits.

“why we’re paying 38-year-olds as they embark on their second full career.”

Why, they ask?

Because my husband and I have been separated for about 1/3rd of our 20 year marriage. Because my children have had an abnormal childhood. Because my husband has typically busted his butt for 16 hours a day instead of the regular eight or nine for two decades. Because that was what we were promised when we signed up. Because my husband agreed to put his life on the line without question when the American people, congress and our president asked him to. Because after 20 years in the military, the vast majority of our soldiers’ bodies are ripped up and the damage done to that 38 year old can never be repaired or paid back.

That’s why.

grrr....!

As long as our government continues to pay all the associated costs of illegal immigration they have no right to consider ever cutting anything for the military.

They already downgraded the medical benefits, and now they want to gut the pay. Where do they think they will find senior NCOs and field grade officers after the changes?

Sorry,
I've worked with or for too many double dippers who earned at least as much in military retirement as my take home. Of course, they also had "specialized", and often undeserved management, jobs based on their military specialties or rank. And, full rights to the same private sector retirement as did I - better ones in the case of my last job.

I don't have a problem with military retirement conditions, but I do have issues with the double dipping from government and government contractors that so very often goes with it.

Seems to me that if your income is still based on government funds, you'd need to hang out until your second retirement kicked in, or you quit working for the feds, until any retirement came due.

Back in 1985 at West Point, one of my professors told us about a plan that the Academy staff came up with to save money for the government and give a better deal to retirees. The USMA Economics Department recommended to the Army and Congress that each service member be given an IRA instead of a pension plan. The government assumes an extremely modest rate of return for the I.O.U.'s used to compute retirement pay. An IRA is real and pays out a better rate. (401k's had not been invented yet.)

The plan also called for vesting after 10 years of service.

Future SecDef Les Aspin was the ranking member of the relevant committee--and the bastard kibboshed the plan.

Not a bad idea...Right now I can't trust this current crowd with such a plan. They have already made noise about confiscating IRAs and 401Ks.

Arnold Punaro. The egg with legs. He's got his two federal retirements and parlayed his gov't service into beltway banditry with SAIC and "panels" galore with Uncle Sugar.

Screw him.
