My DIL just returned from a 9 week internship with stroke victims. She was taught to introduce herself, even if they were comatose. With one patient she mentioned a couple of times that she was going to challenge him to a Thumb wrestling match when he got better. Three weeks later when he was awake and on the mend she remembered to reintroduce herself and he told her that he didn’t remember her name but he knew she was the thumb wrestling lady.

This used to be standard procedure, glad to hear it’s
not entirely obsolete. I recall reading in one of the
famous “advice colums” when I was quite young that one
should always assume that a person can hear what is
being said.
