YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight said an autopsy today is expected to shed light on the cause of death of a unidentified man whose body was found in the Yakima River.

The body was found floating in the river Saturday afternoon just south of the Flint Lane fishing ponds, about three miles south of Wapato.

Sheriff’s deputies said the body did not appear to have been in the water long and that there was no obvious sign of foul play, suggesting the man drowned. The autopsy is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

In addition to cause of death, the man’s identity remains a mystery. He was young, perhaps in his 20s, and appeared to be Hispanic or Native American. He had spiked hair, a light mustache and was wearing blue-checked swim shorts and black and red Nike shoes.

Slight said if no one comes forward with a possible identity, he will have to obtain fingerprints Monday. Anyone with information about the man may call the sheriff's office at 509-574-2500.

“Slight said if no one comes forward with a possible identity, he will have to obtain fingerprints Monday.”

You’re going to cut his body apart to determine the cause of death.

But it’s going to be a problem to take his fingerprints to ID the guy?? I must be missing something on this story.

As an aside, it’s amazing the number of people who drown swimming in rivers to cool off.

Rivers are dangerous, folks, and they change constantly underwater. You never know what kind of currents and sinkholes and traps are just below the surface.
