Barack Obama and senior Democratic politicians are attempting to revive unpopular memories of George W Bush in a bid to undermine the resurgence of the Republicans ahead of this autumn's mid-terms.
The US President, who will this week travel to Texas his predecessor's heartland has repeatedly warned in recent days that Republicans do not have a "single idea" that differs from Mr Bush's policies.
Democrat members of Congress, who are returning to their states to campaign for November's elections, have been advised to remind voters of the alleged damage that Mr Bush's policies caused to the US economy.
Mr Bush left office more than 18 months ago as one of the United States' least popular presidents with an approval rating of less than 30 per cent.
He has kept a low profile since stepping down. However, this may be about to change as his memoirs are due to be published just days after the mid-term elections in November.
Democrat strategists hope that details of the book will begin leaking in the run-up to polling day placing the Bush legacy as a central issue for voters.
The Republicans have called the strategy "desperate" and "sad" and claim it is designed to deflect attention from the growing concerns over Mr Obama's record.
The current President's approval rating is now below 50 percent amid voter concerns over the continuing high levels of American unemployment. Senior White House aides have publicly warned that they may lose control of the US Congress in the mid-terms as a result.

Just say NO to drugs! You don't want to end up becoming a DemocRAT do you?
Bush 5% unemployment
Obama 10% unemployment
Bring it on!
Onward into the past ! Good luck wit dat .
Morons.
The Wonberful Wizzard of BOZ really is a humbug.
So Bush, how’d that New Tone & Compassionate Conservatism work out for ya?
- Bush budget deficits in the bilions.
- Obama budget deficits in the trillions.
- Bush unemployment down to 4.2%
- Obama lowest unemployment over 7.5%
Bring it on beotches!!!
The Rats have NOTHING to run on, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Next they’ll be reminding people of the Warren Harding administration and how President Reagan was sooooo mean to our “friends”, the Soviets...
One way to handle this strategy is simply to point out it doesn’t make any sense of the Dems to advocate following Bush’s failed collectivist policies (e.g, Medicare prescription drug coverage) on an even more colossally wrong scale.
This strategy may make sense from the standpoint of trying to keep their base on board but it won’t help much with independents who are going to decide all the races that matter.
Bush’s problem was that he was too liberal. It would be easy to morph Barack Obama into Bush. His policies, extreme though they are, are not much more liberal than Bush’s.
In fact, try to figure out what Obama is saying when he says that the GOP drove us into the ditch. Which policy is he talking about? Virtually every policy that Bush had is one that Obama has continued, or even expanded on. The only exception is that Bush did not have a stimulus, but since the stimulus failed, I don’t see how that could be Obama’s claim to fame.
Even the tax cuts, which I doubt anyone believes caused this recession, could have been repealed by the Dems in the last 4 years during which they held control of Congress. But they did not do so.
The people are getting real tired of blaming President Bush for the missteps of the current President. Unless he is willing to accept what he has done in the last 18 months, the people will not trust him any longer. After the November elections, I see his approval rating below 30%. At that point, I doubt he will run for re-election. That is unless the people honestly and truly want true socialism and communism. If this is the case, they best look to the USSR and see how they did. It has never worked in the history of the world, and won’t now.
Knock me over with a feather.
I think you have a great point there BUT it would be lost given the intelligence of the average voter to understand what you are saying.
The GOP should look forward in any argument...let them look backward...it usually never works for the naysayers.
They Marxist horde shouldn’t rush to misunderestimate Dubya. The people could do worse. Miss him yet?
agreed- the GOP better grow some cojones and go after the rats record...
All that will do is remind everyone who voted for this sorry excuse for a president that they made a colossal mistake.
Bring it on.
