By law, Medicare cannot reject any treatment based upon cost. It will pay $55,000 for patients with advanced breast cancer to receive the chemotherapy drug Avastin, even though it extends life only an average of a month and a half

So let me see if I have this right:

If that was your month and a half of life we were talking about, you'd take a dive for your fellow man? Give up the ghost to save us a few bucks? How noble!

You obviously missed the point - that is the whole “scandal” is self made by the health care industry - if they wouldn’t prescribe tons of unnecessary tests, hospital stays etc... (as shown repeatedly in the article) there would be MORE money left over to pay for the NECESSARY treatments!

It is the height of hypocracy for the “professionals” to, on the one side claim “sympathy” with the dying by stating that living the last days strapped in a bed and doped up is not “nobel” and at the same time order exactly that treatement - AND then have the balls to claim us patients need to make sacrifices if we want good care.
