Senate passes bill to save teacher, police jobs –

WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to provide billions to save the jobs of teachers and other public workers is on track to pass the Senate, helped along by the votes of a couple of GOP moderates. Democrats cracked a GOP filibuster on Wednesday, and the House was being called back from its summer break for an expected final vote next week to help cash-strapped states and school districts. The $26 billion measure would help states ease their severe budget problems and, advocates said, stop the layoffs of perhaps 300,000 teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public employees. Though scaled back, the bill also would salvage a victory for Democrats who have been unable to deliver most of the jobs help they and President Barack Obama promised.

The legislation advanced by a 61-38 tally that all but ensured it would pass the Senate on Thursday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would call the House back into session next week to approve the measure to get it to Obama for his signature before most schools reopen. Many Republicans objected to the expense at a time of record budget deficits, but moderate Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine cast the key votes to break the filibuster — as they did last month in helping Democrats pass a six-month extension of jobless benefits.

(from another board)

It’s basically a ploy to have the American taxpayers fill up campaign coffers for Dems.

$10 billion of this money goes to the unions. Before the money gets to
the “teachers” the unions skim off their share of mandatory
“contributions”.

The money skimmed by the unions goes directly into the union political
advocacy/footsoldier network to get out votes for Dems.

Morale and contributions for Dems are down this cycle, and Pelosi is
throwing a hail mary pass here. She has to close the enthusiasm gap by
coercing the American taxpayer into footing the bill for Dem
campaigns. It’s a money laundering scam.

Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine cast the key votes to break the filibuster

When the big crash arrives, Snow and Collins will be on the list of democrats to blame. The two will be just as guilty as all the other leftists.

Never forget who did this. Their economic 9/11 must never be forgotten.

When seconds count, they're only minutes away.

Why can’t teachers be canned like anyone else? There is nothing terribly special about a teacher. Fire them!

Parents are doing a better job of schooling the children. Public schools are nothing but tax payer funded orphanages.
If you want your kids to get an education, do it yourself, or find a nice private school.

Support lower cost and more competition. Support school choice.

More debt added to our grandkids grandkids accounts.

Just wait until the American people get the news - They've bailed out another useless entity. They're going to be furious!

“A primary defeat for Snowe in 2012 would send a strong message.”

Not possible. If it is close she will just run as a dim. All the incumbent New England RINO’s are lost causes.

Florida sees rise of the independent voter
The number of `no party’ voters in Florida continues to grow, while the big lead registered Democrats had over registered Republicans is getting smaller.

My thought on that is different than yours. They didn’t switch the last time we were the majority. My take on it is that they continue to hurt us from within, as the Ls still outnumber the Cs. (Liberals vs Conservatives)

What you’ll more likely see is Arlen Specter types try to switch parties, to obtain nice appointments.

That’s what generally happens when the majority party changes.

And of course the brilliant Republican party will welcome them with panting tongues and ear to ear smiles.

Then we fail to pass anything of merit and lose the majority back in four years or less.

That's fine. I just don't want her pretending to be a Republican, as it allows the Democrats to pretend they aren't really running things.

IMO, this woman is a die hard Leftist. She doesn't see Obama as a Leftist. (I'm thinking she probably says to herself, why he's just like me.) If she does, she's right.

Am I the only one who noticed the NYTs can't seem to build their logo without an Islamic crescent? Am I being too picky here?

I'd think the good people of New Walk would have bitch slapped them by now, if I wasn't being too picky.

For the children... Oh, no...we'll have to lay off teachers, fire and police... It is always the same crapola. How about laying off the numerous drones who are in numerous BS jobs as anonymous bureaucrats, re-figuring the ridiculous benefit packages, re-figuring the obscene retirement benefits and so forth. Where are the guillotines when you need them?
