Breaking news: Handel calls Deal, concedes GOP nomination for governor

Just in from Karen Handel:

I want to thank all of my friends, supporters, volunteers and my campaign team for a tremendous effort over the last 16 months. We ran a terrific campaign, beat the odds to come in first place in the Primary, and came so very close in the runoff election.

As of this morning, we are four tenths of a percentage point behind Nathan Deal with absentee ballots and overseas military votes yet to be counted.

We certainly have the option of requesting the automatic statewide recount. But we are not going to do that.

The best thing for our party is to rally around Congressman Deal as our nominee in the fight against Roy Barnes. Barnes would return Georgia to a past that is best kept in our rearview mirror. We must marshal all of our resources to defeat him.

I spoke with Nathan this morning and let him know that I endorse his candidacy and look forward to the fight against Barnes. I have also called on all who were supporting me to give their same

So David Keene’s ACU is your first authority on conservatism? The same David Keene who endorsed Snarlin’ Arlen Specter, the poster boy for RINOism?

So Obama, are you going to run in 2012? Snicker.

Why are you sickering? Still haven't realized BHO feels no need to win re-election?!

Will you welcome Pres. Hillary Clinton?

Yeah, well it’s too bad that Handel (helped by CREW) slandered Johnson with charges of illegal activity - that were proven to be lies, yet probably cost him the race because unlike Deal and Handel he did not have the $$ as a grassroots candidate to run ads to counter Handel’s lies.

When Deal confronted her with that truth in the debate, and everyone knew it by then, she still refused to admit it. Just like all the other things she tried to cover up.

A lot of those folks who voted for her looked at nothing except endorsements, and did not do their own homework. The ones that did, that I know (including a lot of tea party friends) switched.

I doubt it. Hillary is a stuck to Obama. Obama has burned those bridges for her. Any Repub who runs a competent campaign will take her out.

Good job, Nathan. I wonder if Sarah will endorse him now.

If this were a radical progressive Obama dem they would find votes in trees and car trunks until they won.

This was a smart move by Handel. Unfortunately, Deal has ethics issues and Barnes is going to go after him on those. I wouldn't be surprised if some ginned up indictments come Deal's way. This is probably why she gracefully stepped aside.

This is also a win-win for Palin. Handel lost by a fraction of 1% so they can't say her endorsement hurted her, and also by not losing the general election (which she would have) that also saves Palin some criticism as well.

That doesn’t make you a RINO.

"I can think of several Republicans who have not accepted defeat gracefully."

One of Nixon's finest moments, for example. Although I wish he'd ripped the cover off of Chicago corruption. And I'm glad that GWB and Jim Baker battled the Florida chad mess.

“The group making this charge is called CREW. They are a George Soros funded propaganda outfit. The accusation here is pure gutter politics has no legal base.”

The Office of Congressional Ethics issued a report with this allegation, and Deal then resigned his seat. I doubt that the OCE was strongly influenced by CREW.

” ... the typical CREW accusation rarely goes anywhere no matter what it is ~ and that happens when you just make up stuff with no basis”

There is a report by the Office of Congressional Ethics making these allegations.

I don’t think this will be a win for Palin - she chose the least conservative in a 7 person primary. Most folks in Georgia know this by now. People posted on her Facebook criticizing her pick, wrote her letters, urged her to reconsider and she did not respond to any of it. It has made me pause and wonder at times if she is making choices that best benefit the cause of conservatism (and by that I don’t mean “purism”, I mean the best small-government, constitutional-focused candidate) or her own cause.

Did you see how many votes for Handel came from Fulton county? Perhaps the most liberal county in our state, and it’s often the tail that wags the dog.

I still support Palin, but this was not the best pick for Georgia. My husband, on the other hand, has completely lost all his support. It was the “straw” for him.

I voted for Johnson in the primary. But I just couldn’t make up my mind about who to pick in the runoff.

Deal was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee (that bastion of morality) and is no longer in the House. There is no law enforcement investigation. The smear letter that Handel sent to everyone came from an organization named CREW, which is a left wing propaganda front funded by Soros.

CREW has received financial backing from George Soros's Open Society Institute, Democracy Alliance, the Tides Foundation, the Streisand Foundation, the Arca Foundation, the David Geffen Foundation, the Wallace Global Fund, the Mayberg Family Charitable Foundation, the Woodbury Fund, and the Sheller Family Foundation -- all institutions distinguished by their support for far-left causes.

The fact that Handel would use information from such a group against a fellow republican should send up a warehouse full of red flags to conservatives.

There is a report by the Office of Congressional Ethics making these allegations.

It was never pursued.

There was ample time for any of his opponents to come out and prove this ethics charge too. None did.

I am one of the votes that put Deal over the top.

Hope he stays true.

Thanks for that info and link Pan_Yan.

Conservatives need to get behind Deal now, no matter what you think of him. Liberals do not need FR’s help in negative campaigning against Deal - Barnes MUST be defeated in November, he is lockstep with Obama.

“Deal was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee (that bastion of morality) and is no longer in the House.”

The OCE investigation was completed and a report was issued. Congress has no enforecement powers over non-members. So, when Deal resigned his seat, after the report was issued, the OCE report became moot.
