I remember Redd Foxx using it on his show--Sanford and Son. He told the cop, "There's enough niggas in here to make a Tarzan movie." I always thought that was pretty darn funny.

She makes an excellent point. I used to stop of at a go-go sometimes on my way home from work and they used to play a lot of rap or hip hop style songs that constantly used the n word. So I started using the word rather loudly myself at the bar despite their being black people there as well. The barmaid rushed up to tell me to stop and I made it clear to her that I have to hear it in the songs then I am going to say it. I told her to ban it from the songs. Unbelievably I won. They stopped playing songs using that word from then on.

It's so toxic you can't even use the n-word in a statement in *support* of the black community.
It's ridiculous but that's the way it is.
Laura ought to know that.

In high school, years ago, we were taught that the word meant “impure black”, and was used by the field workers to describe the children of women who had been impregnated by the “white” masters. IOW mulattoes....HMMM?
"Niger" I believe is the base word for black is many of the romantic languages. The island of Niger, Niger River, Nigeria, Nigerian all not offensive.
The only reason it now has negative meaning is that it was deemed to be negative.
Sort of like the word "damn"...which comes from Latin damno which means to stop or hold back. Asking God to damn (stop) something is VERY appropriate.

She should not have apologized. She made a good point.

Or E: My 96 year-old Norwegian grandmother. As in “I had such a nice time at dinner with that nigger girl from across the street.”
(The “girl” in question was probably 50 years old!) Of course my GM has been dead for 30+ years - but boy did it make me cringe, even though she didn’t mean anything by it. I’m still not sure why Dr. Laura felt the need to apologize.

“Nor is it okay to read ‘The Nigger of the Narcissus’ by Joseph Conrad nor the brilliant short story by Flannery O’Connor, ‘The Artifical Nigger.’”
Jeez. It seems everyone is writing a book about the president these days.

Although Dr. Lala’s point was valid, apparently she has too much white guilt to be able to illustrate it effectively. I imagine she will not be employed for much longer, because she has already signaled her weakness.

With red hair, I have been called many names such as red, Carrot top, little Red all my life. I guess I should really push for no one to be able to use these words. (sic)
And there's baldie, chrome dome, etc.

...but boy did it make me cringe, even though she didnt mean anything by it.It used to make me cringe too. It was the word you heard just before the violence started. It was a vile, nasty word that wasn't to be spoken. Now, Im desensitized to it. Sadly.

Here’s another one: Why is it alright for black people to refer to white men as “white boy”? But don’t you dare call a black man “black boy”. Its all so confusing.
