Editorial: The Real American Job
Barron's ^ | August 14, 2010 | By THOMAS G. DONLAN

AS MEMBERS OF CONGRESS flew home for summer recess, the Obama administration sent along a road map to America's future. It's a vision of a new economy with a new focus on manufacturing, especially for export.

The policy is called "Make It in America." In one part of the marketing effort, President Barack Obama spoke about it to the AFL-CIO executive council:

"There are other countries fighting for those jobs in China and India and in Germany and other parts of Europe. But the U.S. doesn't play for second place. As long as I'm president, I'm going to keep fighting night and day to make sure that we win those jobs."

The president missed the point of economic competition. Businesses don't fight for jobs, they struggle to produce the best possible products at the lowest possible cost, and to sell to the greatest possible number of customers. The goal is profit; jobs follow profit.

Obama added, "The message I want to deliver to our competitors—and to those in Washington who've tried to block our progress at every step of the way—is that we are going to rebuild this economy stronger than before, and at the heart of it are going to be three powerful words: Made in America."

If "we" means the government and the AFL-CIO, rebuilding the economy will take a long time.

Hmm, a little autarchy, anyone? Typical of highly managed economies - vertical unions, state controlled businesses that manufacture the only things that consumers are allowed to buy, the usual Hugo Chavez fascist garbage.

Obama either doesn’t understand - or acts like he doesn’t understand - basic economics. Business don’t “create jobs”, they grow their businesses in order to make more money, and often that means they need to build more stuff, offer more services, etc, which means they hire people to do that. The only way to get more jobs is to have a healthy, growing, profitable business community. (Or, have the government hire people and tax, borrow, or print money to pay them with).

Any high school kid ought to understand this. It’s not so surprising that Obama bamboozles his way around the issues, what amazes me is the number of solid capitalistic Democrats and Independents who fall for it. Shame on them, they know better. Microeconomics doesn’t know an R from a D from an I.

That’s his entire worldview right there. Everything is reduced to a manipulable box that he gets to name, and he then draws lines between the boxes that produce money and power for him to redistribute how he pleases.

See the look on his face. Quite pleased with himself.

If we only could believe it, the USA would be on the road to recovery.

Yeah ... right .... he won't rest until blah blah blah. I think I know why his eyes are brown. It's the same reason flys keep landing on his face.

Obama is the union boss best friend. The Kenyan is delusional

Thinking about this: The only way Obama can do this is by subsiding his union buddies to produce goods cheap enough to compete in a global economy.

So probably he isn't delusional after all, just doing what he does best, passing the burden onto the American taxpayer to subsidize the Unions and the democrats.

Barack Obama will say ANYTHING to anyone he wants to impress. I’m convinced he doesn’t believe half of what he says, but saying it does buy him the prestige and admiration he so desires.
