I beg to differ, Barry Goldwater was the finest U.S. Senator from Arizona in his prime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“I’ve heard people say that they regard him an ugly alternative to McCain, and I don’t know enough about him to know why.”

From what I understand (I don’t know, I don’t really feel the same myself), Hayworth seems to give off this creepy vibe. I think that a lot of people here in AZsee this as a race between a bad-tempered, half-senile, useless old fart and an unhealthily tanned, glib, slimy used-car salesman.

In which case, give me the slimy used-car salesman everytime.

At least, we know where he stands...and we only know where the old fart says he stands...today.

Just spent the last 90 minutes dialing for JD. I live in CA but the campaign needs volunteers. It’s a pretty good system they have—a little prepared script, a couple of check boxes. If Juan wins I’ll feel the better for helping an alternative. Besides, my free minutes kick in at 8 and it’s kinda fun talking to AZ’s to find out how they feel!

The negative whiners posting before me have no one but themselves to blame for the outcome.

Every 10 year old has a cell phone. How bout using yours to get out the vote for JD. I may have changed a handful of voters minds tonight.

That’s like getting to vote over and over again! Plus you can vent to the people that actually will decide what to do with the old lying fart!

Good work! Keep it up.

I'm in Texas...but contributed to the Hayworth campaign, nonetheless.

Yes, so did I. It may feel a little like being an outsider when you make some calls, but it really is fun and stress relieving. Since you contributed, I imagine you got the same email on how to register to make calls. It’ll be a miracle if he can pull it off, but it’s worth a shot.

Thanks for donating.

So am I. I just pray to God that it makes a difference, other than futilely canceling out a single vote in the ever-rising tide of support for McCain.

I’ve contributed to JD. All I can hope for is the polls are not reading the real sentiment here in AZ and an upset happens on primary day. I don’t know why McPain, simply by virtue of his own negative ads, has not been overwhelmingly rejected already. He must be retired as he is SOoo part of the Washington illness called ‘RINO Progressive’. JD’s resources and response has been disappointingly lacking. Perhaps the AZ chapter of the ‘Tea Party’ will help JD surge and triumph. One week to go.

Yes, you're right, he is going to get stomped. I've heard people say that they regard him an ugly alternative to McCain, and I don't know enough about him to know why. Even one of our fellow FReepers has lost enthusiasm for his candidacy. I wonder if there had been other alternatives at the outset. How awful that we'll again be lumped with McCain!

Are you still in Minnesota? can't believe that you really hear much about JD

Before you can be the finest Arizona senator in our era, you have to be elected to the Senate. This author seems to have overlooked that detail.

“”Rasmussen: McCain no longer ‘potentially vulnerable’

While many of Rasmussen’s previous polls described McCain as potentially vulnerable because his support consistently hovered around 50 percent, usually a bad sign for an incumbent. Rasmussen noted that McCain’s approval numbers were similar to those of U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who lost in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary.

But unlike Specter’s challenger, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, Rasmussen said Hayworth is not gaining any ground on his opponent.

“That comparison no longer works,” Rasmussen wrote of the Hayworth-Specter comparison. “In the Arizona match-up, Hayworth is falling further behind in the final month before the primary.””

troll? I guess this site is exclusive only to those who support JD. Get over it JD was a weak candidate and carried too much baggage. He will lose and needs to retire.

Suck it, troll! Yes, JD has an uphill battle ahead of him but his evil opponent has the "advantage" of a deal with the Devil. The Prince of Darkness can pull a few strings when he needs to.

Are the early 60’s not considered part of “our era”. I like JD, but I don’t know whether he’s on a par with Barry Goldwater.

Yeah, the odds against J.D. are very long (and the time is very short). But ya never know. Remember President Mike Dukakis- the guy who coasted to victory with his 18 point lead in the polls? I don’t either.

“I don’t know why McPain, simply by virtue of his own negative ads, has not been overwhelmingly rejected already...”

My sense is that the infommercial imbroglio really took the wind out of his sails (and added to the negative “personality” perceptions of him that you see in some of the comments). Hayworth admitted after the infommercial became a big topic that he shouldn’t have done it in retrospect- and then lost the momentum he had been gaining.

McCain by comparison has gotten away “with murder”, so to speak politically- Keating 5; his constant psychological need to “reach across the aisle” with Dems who laugh at him behind his back for his gullibility; his support of the failed bailout, etc.

But I guess the real question for AZ Republicans is do they really want to put an aging guy back in office who is only going to work to undermine all the efforts that were put into the illegal immigration laws (and everything else)? This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity- but you know how the movie always ends with McCain on screen...

NOoooo .... Can we just get the t-shirt and say we’ve been there already ?

I don’t think JD would be over-the-top great, just WAY WAY WAY better than the RINO McCain.

“but you know how the movie always ends with McCain on screen...”

Citizen McCain - the sequel ...
Really Arizona, we can spare ourselves this McPain !
Please get out and vote next Tuesday.
