Obama: Social Security 'is not in crisis'
The Hill [Washington, DC] | August 18, 2010 | Jordan Fabian

Posted on 08/18/2010 11:22:32 AM PDT by Nachum

President Obama said Social Security is not in crisis and only modest changes are needed to keep it solvent. The president acknowledged at a small town hall gathering in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday that the pension fund "has to be tweaked because the population is getting older" but said Republicans' plans to drastically overhaul the program are wrong. "Social Security is not in crisis," Obama said. "We're going to have to make some modest adjustments in order to strengthen it." Social Security has become a significant campaign issue during the August recess — Democrats have attacked the GOP,

If Imam Stroker says that it’s so, then it must be so.

I am so glad that he cleared that up.

The typical elitist, Ivy League attorney ignorance on arudimentary economic issue: Too stupid to even see the clear economic picture, that even your average eight year old could grasp.

It would have been REAL helpful if these effete snobs had actually worked at an actual, honest job at some point in their cushioned, unproductive lives.

Exactly - It sounds like Barry is listening too much to the moronic Paul Krugman who also believes that there is no problem:

http://market-ticker.org/archives/2584-Revoke-Krugmans-PhD-Social-Security.html

Krugman: “Social Security has been running surpluses for the last quarter-century, banking those surpluses in a special account, the so-called trust fund.”

That so-called “trust fund” is a fraud. It does not exist.

Here’s what actually happens (and Krugman knows this, which makes him a damned liar besides):

1. Your tax dollars go to Treasury
2. Treasury keeps them and issues “special” Treasury bonds to the Social Security “trust fund.”
3. Treasury counts these tax receipts against the federal deficit, making it look (much, until the last year) smaller than it really is.

The problem is that Treasury spent the money and thus doesn’t have anything with which to redeem the IOUs!

If Obama thinks SS is not in crisis, he’s alreading factoring in a “tweak” that will involve your IRA and 401k accounts coupled with offsets in SS benefit calculations.

“The problem is that Treasury spent the money and thus doesn’t have anything with which to redeem the IOUs!”

The public needs to be educated about the true nature of Social Security economics. The left is once again trying to scare the public, and the elderly, into voting against ‘those heartless Republicans who want to take away your SS”.

It needs to be pointed out to them that it is the democrats who have been raiding SS for years to pay for their pet social engineering projects and to buy votes from their favorite voting blocks. It needs to be pointed out that there is no ‘lock box’ and that SS money is treated no differently than any other dime of revenue the rats in Washington get their hands on. Republicans cannot let the left successfully use these scare tactics once again.

Well, if he said it, it must be true. After all, President Obama is celebrated all over the world as an honest man who would never tell a lie.

Obama’s science czar, John Holdren has probably convinced him that it's time to start euthanizing everyone over 60. Within a few years Social Security could be pulled out of the general fund to become an enormous slush fund.

If SS is in such good shape, why hasn’t there been a cost of living increase?

The COLA is calculated directly from the consumer price index without any reflection on how SS is doing financially.

The January 2010 COLA was calculated based on price changes from 3rd quarter 2008 to 3rd quarter 2009. That was right when the gasoline and natural gas prices collapsed, so inflation was negative during that year. Gasoline and natural gas's price bubble going into the middle of 2008 was the cause of a bigger than usual COLA for 2009.

I paid over $4 per gallon once in July 2008. Buy Christmas it had bottomed out at $1.419.

Inflation adjusted I-bonds have their rates set based on the same inflation information, so I went quite a while with no interest at all because the inflation adjustment was more negative than my bonds' 3% base rate.

Oh, then you won’t mind if I just opt out of the whole shell game, since it’s in such great shape, right? I’ll make you an offer. Since I’m still in my 30’s (barely) and still have quite a while before considering retirement, you go ahead and keep what I’ve paid in and I’ll keep my ‘contributions’ along with the ‘contributions’ my employer makes in my name from here on out, and I’ll sign an agreement that says I will never apply for or take one penny of SS/SSI money. Deal?

Now — we’re for a provision that destitution should not follow unemployment by reason of old age, and to that end we’ve accepted Social Security as a step toward meeting the problem.

But we’re against those entrusted with this program when they practice deception regarding its fiscal shortcomings, when they charge that any criticism of the program means that we want to end payments to those people who depend on them for a livelihood. They’ve called it “insurance” to us in a hundred million pieces of literature. But then they appeared before the Supreme Court and they testified it was a welfare program. They only use the term “insurance” to sell it to the people. And they said Social Security dues are a tax for the general use of the government, and the government has used that tax. There is no fund, because Robert Byers, the actuarial head, appeared before a congressional committee and admitted that Social Security as of this moment is 298 billion dollars in the hole. But he said there should be no cause for worry because as long as they have the power to tax, they could always take away from the people whatever they needed to bail them out of trouble. And they’re doing just that.

A young man, 21 years of age, working at an average salary — his Social Security contribution would, in the open market, buy him an insurance policy that would guarantee 220 dollars a month at age 65. The government promises 127. He could live it up until he’s 31 and then take out a policy that would pay more than Social Security. Now are we so lacking in business sense that we can’t put this program on a sound basis, so that people who do require those payments will find they can get them when they’re due — that the cupboard isn’t bare?

(Ronald Reagan, 1964 )

“The ‘Pubs take 20 minutes to make try to make a point...most the time unsuccessfully.”

I think to some extent it's the mind set. The left is always in ‘attack’ mode. The Repubs tend to be defensive in their answers, and so appear to be ‘spinning’. They need to put the left on the defensive, over and over and over again. It's not that difficult. They practically hand out ammunition that can be used against them.

The best defense is a good offense - very few have figured that out when it comes to publicly responding to the Left. It’s a hard lesson especially when you are trying to play by the rules and be civil, and that’s the last thing the Left wants to do.
