What Spreads Faster Than Bedbugs? Social Stigma (you can thank the enviro-whackos for this one!)
The New York Times ^ | 2010-08-21 | Emily B. Hager

Jeremy Sparig spent months fighting bedbugs. Now, to some people, he is like a mattress left on the street, something best avoided in these times.

“They don’t want to hug you anymore; they don’t want you coming over,” said Mr. Sparig, of East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “You’re like a leper.”

At the Brooklyn district attorney’s office, which recently had a bedbug breakout, defense lawyers are skittish about visiting, and it is not because of the fierce prosecutors.

Even Steven Smollens, a housing lawyer who has helped many tenants with bedbugs, has his guard up. Those clients are barred from his office. “I meet outside,” he said. “There’s a Starbucks across the street.”

Beyond the bites and the itching, the bother and the expense, victims of the nation’s most recent plague are finding that an invisible scourge awaits them in the form of bedbug stigma. Friends begin to keep their distance. Invitations are rescinded. For months, one woman said, her mother was afraid to tell her that she had an infestation. When she found out and went to clean her mother’s apartment, she said, “Nobody wanted to help me.”

Fear and suspicion are creeping into the social fabric wherever bedbugs are turning up, which is almost everywhere: “Public health agencies across the country have been overwhelmed by complaints about bedbugs,” said a joint statement this month from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Bedbugs, once nearly eradicated, have spread across New York City, in part because of the decline in the use of DDT.

Thank you, enviro-whackos!

Morons, DDT caused birth defects, hello. It’s probably bio-warfare. There are better insecticides than DDT, but you do have to spend money on the exterminator

Rachel Carson deserves the same ignominy as any mass murderer in history. How many millions have died because of the ban on DDT. It's another glaring example of what happens when liberals emote falsehoods as facts and we suffer the law of unintended consequences.

Well good grief, they only bite at night. Take the mattress out and spray around all the crevices with a good bug spray and also around the bedroom. Do this every spring and they won’t be much of a bother. I survived them as a child. Never suffered any lasting effects. LOL

Caused birth defects? Genetic retards cause birth defects. Ignorance and megalomania are also causes, and heavy burdens to go through life with.

This infestation has deprived me of one of my favorite past times...dumpster diving. (Curb side actually) I’ve picked up case goods, repaired them and painted them for resale. Now, I cannot. Bedbug live EVERYWHERE and can go for up to one year without food.
But even some of the best neighborhoods are suffering the same plague....

Department of Health and Human Services, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry:

“How can DDT, DDE, and DDD affect children?
There are no studies on the health effects of children exposed to DDT, DDE, or DDD. We can assume that children exposed to large amounts of DDT will have health effects similar to the effects seen in adults. However, we do not know whether children differ from adults in their susceptibility to these substances.

There is no evidence that DDT, DDE, or DDD cause birth defects in people. A study showed that teenage boys whose mothers had higher DDE amounts in the blood when they were pregnant were taller than those whose mothers had lower DDE levels. However, a different study found the opposite in preteen girls. The reason for the discrepancy between these studies is unknown.

Studies in rats have shown that DDT and DDE can mimic the action of natural hormones and in this way affect the development of the reproductive and nervous systems. Puberty was delayed in male rats given high amounts of DDE as juveniles. This could possibly happen in humans. A study in mice showed that exposure to DDT during the first weeks of life may cause neurobehavioral problems later in life.”

Bedbugs are a minor nuisance compared to malaria & dengue carrying mosquitoes which DDT controlled along with bed bugs and other insects.

When I was a kid, all of us kids knew the whine of the DDT truck coming down the street. We made a bee-line for our bikes and rode for miles engulfed in the “smoke.”

That was 40+ years ago.

This stuff kills them because it cuts into the shell and they dehydrate. You can buy it at any garden nursery for about 10$.

Yes. The only drawback is the dust. Use a face mask when spreading it around. Freshwater diatomaceous earth is even edible.

The old biddy and her book have killed millions of adults and children across the globe. But some eagles eggs are getting a harder shell (at least the eggs of birds was the excuse for banning DDT)
