The Department of Justice is seeking to hire linguists fluent in Ebonics to help monitor, translate, and transcribe the secretly recorded conversations of subjects of narcotics investigations, according to federal records.

A maximum of nine Ebonics experts will work with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Atlanta field division, where the linguists, after obtaining a “DEA Sensitive” security clearance, will help investigators decipher the results of “telephonic monitoring of court ordered nonconsensual intercepts, consensual listening devices, and other media”

The DEA’s need for full-time linguists specializing in Ebonics is detailed in bid documents related to the agency’s mid-May issuance of a request for proposal (RFP) covering the provision of as many as 2100 linguists for the drug agency’s various field offices. Answers to the proposal were due from contractors on July 29.

In contract documents, which are excerpted here, Ebonics is listed among 114 languages for which prospective contractors must be able to provide linguists

And while you’re at it, get some for spanglish for those drug cartels. LOL—I guess this is part of obamas’ job program.

You are correct of course, all languages evolve but usually it's a very slow process. Last years gangsters wouldn't know what the hell this years gangsters were talking about. Changing cities, they have to learn a new language.

Indeed. Largely because the purpose of a standard language is mutual intelligibility while the purpose of street slang/an ethnolect is to minimize intelligibility for those outside the group.

One of the WHITE cops in my hometown wrote up a list of street words (ebonics). Some black cop had him fired for insenitivity, prejudice and....you know the drill. He was never reinstated.

Mr. ebonics translator, please conjugate the verb “be”.

Ebonics translator: He be, she be, they be, we be!

check out some urban high school “English” teachers - a great source!

I've told this on F.R. before, it is seared, seared I tell you, in my memory:

In the late 70s, Chicago school teachers were on strike. I was watching the news and one of the picketers was being interviewed. The reporter asked her what she did at the school and her reply was, "I teaches English".

I’m pretty sure that grammar is incorrect.
It’s, “I be teachin’ English.”
