Evangelicals and the Coulter affair
World Net Daily ^ | August 23, 2010 | Joseph Farah

.................I believe that's what Jesus meant when He told us to love our enemies. The ultimate demonstration of love for a Christian should be to evangelize the lost.

There is no indication Ann Coulter has ever used one of her paid speaking engagements to do this. In fact, I'm not even sure a paid speaking engagement is an appropriate forum for evangelizing.

Nevertheless, I have heard from a few Christians who compare Coulter's paid speaking gig to Homocon with Jesus sitting down with tax collectors and sinners.

That is not good discernment.

Coulter is a political activist, a pundit, a satirist. She is not Jesus. And she is not an evangelist. No one is likely to get saved at Homocon because Ann Coulter gives a conservative stump speech.

What will happen as a result of her appearance is that a compromise will be made with sin. Sin will be condoned or appeased. A conservative icon will find accommodation with a sin that would undermine the foundations of Western civilization, the Judeo-Christian ethic and the most basic biblical standards of sexual morality.

I think I am coming at this whole issue from a different angle. It may be tons, or just a few, but strong response to error is a good thing. However, what bothers me is being attacked as a promoter of a homosexual agenda when I have never once commented in support of anything that can even be creatively depicted as such. I agree that there is probably reason for people to be touchy, but if we are going to eat our own then good conservatives are quickly going to find other places to post. What good would FreeRepublic be doing then? That is my point of view anyway.

Now we’re defining 3-6 posters as tons? Out of over 500,000 members?

Okay...

I don't think these were "our own". The lead poster uses either emotion or misuses Scripture to push the agenda. The 2 other posters cheer them on. The talking points are right out of the lefty handbook. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it played out once a day for the last week or so. I hadn't been paying attention before that.

You’ve been much more polite than I would have been. It was an unprovoked attack that shouldn’t have been allowed to stand.

There may be over 500,000 members but the figure that regularly posts (I was told) is 20,000. And we’re talking 3 on every new thread. It’s not the same posters in the scenario everytime. The number depends on the number of threads. I have noticed that the number of homosexual agenda pushers has picked up since Prop 8. If you get 3 threads a day, there will be 9 people pushing the agenda. For FR? I think that’s a lot.

If you mean that, um, other guy, (I REALLY don’t want to ping them) he talks to everyone that way. He’s very nasty. I never see his nasty stuff pulled.

Yeah, actually it’s more than eight, and when one gets banned (lately often by the Boss himself), all the others instantly become silent...

Yet, he's not taken to task for his behavior, but cothrige is criticized for defending himself? That's absurd!

I agree that the vast majority of freepers are opposed to the homosexual agenda. But a surprisingly large number have been vocally in favor of it, just lately.

My list of 40 is not complete, there are more. Many are old signup dates that seem pretty normal except they are in favor of “gay” rights and have been more vocal lately.

Three to six? I have a list of over 40 and there are more. They all don’t post on every thread about the topic! And there are not that many active members. Way, way fewer active commenting members.

Yes, and a couple of others recently I have seen act similarly. I wasn't thinking of the real promoters of the homosexual agenda who I have no doubt do come to try to sew dissent. They need to be opposed with strength.

IMO, a lot of people are seriously freaked out by what’s going on in the world in general and our country in particular. Brings out the best and the worst in people.

And some here are ahem just always very prickly.

Of course it is. But I have hit "abuse" for the same kind of post from the same person and nothing happened. The insults were nasty. I never once insulted that poster. The best advice I could give cothrige is ignore him. That poster doesn't seem to get a slap.

FReepers are human, and not immune to the effect of the moral dilemma manufactured when folks like Dick Cheney, Juan McCain - and their children - become instruments which lead folks into "normalizing" the Un-Godly disordered abomination of Nature.... for political or pecuniary expedience.

There are a couple of posters that I ignore. They never debate. They only insult if you disagree. You’ll have quite a list by the time you’re done. All I have to do is see a name and I avoid them. Sometimes I avoid a thread they’re on. It’s just not worth it.

Thanks. Things did get a bit ugly, didn't they? I do wish I could have kept better control, but...

Given my recent experiences this seems like very good advice, and I will certainly take it to heart.

The strange thing is how recent this is for me, after so many years posting on FreeRepublic. Things could always get heated, very heated, but it always seemed to have to do with things we actually did say. People would fight about tone, nuances of implied meanings, and so on, but it did relate in some determinable way to what was posted, and the accusations were always kept in that frame of reference. It has only been recently that I have noticed people accusing others with seemingly random charges not connected to anything posted at all. It is like some crazy person on the street shouting at you that you stole his jacket. It has taken me by surprise to be honest. I just don't recall that happening in the past.

It's exactly like that. And it's downright scary. I have thought lately that some posters were drunk. Or mentally ill. Or had some elder person syndrome. Alzheimer's maybe. You scratch your head and wonder what they're reading.

I just don't recall that happening in the past.

There have always been flame wars and personal attacks. But this is different.

Yes, I agree. I understand flame wars, and at least at one time it seemed that the personal stuff was in some way tied to things that at least made some sort of sense, even if it was ugly and out of place. This stuff really is kind of demented. The randomness of it all is just so weird. It makes you miss good ol' killfiles.

When I first joined FR we learned from the older signups how to debate and to use links for proof. That kind of thing is gone now. And posters aren't using HTML to quote others so there's proof of what was said. They just make stuff up. You probably remember making statements and having to prove them with links too. Now posters don't care. They ignore links (except for old school posters) and info and make wild claims and accusations. It's like waking up in a foreign land.
