Mexican authorities responded Tuesday night to a shootout at Mexicos attorney generals office (PGR) in Matamoros and to a grenade that was thrown near B&M International Bridge.
Sources say the incident began when a brief firefight broke out between Mexican military and armed gunmen at approximately 8 p.m. at the PGR offices on Sixth Street in Matamoros.
It was not clear if anyone was injured or killed in this latest attack.
During the attack, a grenade exploded near the Junta de Aguas y Drenajes facility a few yards away from B&M International Bridge.
Because of the explosion, a number of federal, county and local law enforcement officials on the U.S. side of the border rushed to secure the area around the bridge.
According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, the sheriffs department SWAT team was deployed to the bridge to help secure the area and prevent any possible spillover of violence.
In order to reduce the risk to the public, the bridge was shut down for southbound traffic for approximately one hour, Lucio said.
We did that to keep the public from going over there and driving into a possibly dangerous situation, Lucio said. Once the situation was under control, we opened the bridge again.
According to a Mexican law enforcement official who asked that his name not be released, federal authorities have one man in custody in connection with the grenade attack.
The man was identified only as El Zapatillas and is believed to be a member of the Zetas criminal organization.
This is the fourth grenade attack in Matamoros in recent days.
Two weeks ago the Televisa station in Matamoros came under attack when two grenades where thrown from a moving vehicle.
Last Friday, a grenade was thrown at the Gran Hotel Residencial, which is known to house Mexican federal police officers and investigators. The grenade did not detonate.
And on Sunday, someone threw a concussion grenade from a moving vehicle at the PGR building. The blast destroyed an SUV, but none of the Mexican soldiers who protect the building were injured.
WE must close the gun show loophole that allows citizens to buy grenades, RPGs, artillery, main battle tanks, and advanced fighter aricraft without the government's knowledge. (Oh wait, you can't buy these things at gun shows anyway)
You beat me to it in exposing the nonsense of “it came from America”.
It appears that the Mexican government is losing control.
Bump.
My, My, My, what a surprise—duh!!!
Just herard on TV that the El Presidentia is stopping all charges and hearings against illegals in the U.S., nada, none, all, now lets see, elections coming up in the not so far furture, goodness me, what is happening to us.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Matamoros means Muslim killer in Spanish. Short for Santiago Matamoros, Patron Saint of Christian Spanish armies.
No, it actually means Moor killer, or killer of Moors. The Moors so happened to be Muslim.
