The cost of getting married in California may soon go up to shelter women whose marriages turn violent.
The Senate Thursday gave final approval to legislation, Senate Bill 662, that would allow county boards of supervisors to boost marriage license fees from $23 to $33 with the extra $10 going to keep shelters for victims of domestic abuse from closing.

Based on the court ruling that the government must treat every citizen equally, this seems to be a law for women only and UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

"Ridiculous" Beyond ridiculous.
As beautiful as it is in California, with all the liberals and illegals I couldn't stand to live there for anything.

If the money is going for domestic abuse shelters, then there should be a shack up tax. Most of the truly violent situations come from those kind of arrangements, so it would be more efficient.

I can’t think of a more romantic way to start a wedding than shelling out another $10 for domestic abuse shelters ... hey, why not another $100 for deadbeat Dad coverage, or Runaway from home Mothers? And what about parents who kill their kids, who will pay for their psych bills while they “recover from the trauma of what they have done?”
Cripes, this is so disgusting ... what won’t we be paying for next ... just ... shit.

How come every time some low life commits a crime of any type, the fricken government types go after everyone else?
Place a minimum $100,000 fine on every abuser to fund your social engineering plans not people who follow the law.
We need way more punishment of evil people and reduced taxation of the civilized amongst us.

“How about a tax on Super Bowl Tickets to pay for Womens Shelters?????? Hmmmmmm?????”
That would be grossly unfair to us Patriot fans, who would be taxed more often than everyone else.

It never ends does it? Force the cost of those who can't or won't do something over to those who can and will.
It will end only when we rise up en masse and elect people who aren't more socialist than the rest of us.

Remember one of the Bush tax cuts for the WEALTHY was the removal of the Marriage tax penalty. Its returning to a 1040 near you. If one spouse is still working and one is on SS there is a marriage penalty. In olden times SS benefits used to be taxed at 50%, now the are added to ordinary income at up to 80%.

It should be $5,000 for a marriage license and $5 to get divorced.
