Beautiful beyond belief and anti-Marxist. Now, that’s a winning combination!… (Powerline)- We missed an important moment at the Miss Universe pageant on Saturday night. The outgoing Miss Universe made a little political statement on her final catwalk that was visible to Venezuelans but probably no one else, holding up an obsolete seven star pre-Chavez era flag. She did it to signal distress in her country, and nowhere is that move evident than in Venezuela’s violent crime. This week the news came out that Caracas is the most violent city in the world, a distinction it holds over Kabul, Baghdad, Sao Paulo and Ciudad Juarez.
Hugo Chavez has made Venezuela a real hellhole and that’s prompting little public statements amid public discord. Investor’s Business Daily brings the news in “The killing fields of Caracas.”...

That flag speaks for itself. It's the pre-Chavez national standard of Venezuela, and people display it explicitly to protest Chavez.
It's analogous to holding up a "Don't tread on me" flag prior to the US Revolution.

I’ve become quite jaded with people who make political statements and then join the establishment when the opportunity presents itself. Unfortunately for this lady, she will encounter many socialists in this country as well. I hope she holds her ground but I will withhold my praise for now. I seem to recall that Ms. Estefan was conservative leaning at one time.
If she is like every other upper middle class woman in Venezuela, her family long ago established a beach head in Miami and they all have some kind of visa that allows them to remain in the US indefinitely.

A few years ago I was working on a project for a refinery in Venezuela. Some of the engineers and maintenance technicians were here stateside for the factory acceptance test of the process control system. Most did not like Chavez, and this was before his major power grabs. Some of the techs already had property in the States, others were looking for refinery tech jobs in the local area.
One tech had on his laptop wallpaper a picture calling Chavez “La Constitucional Menaza”.
I am being vague on when and where this was so to avoid these people being recognized by Venezuelan “enforcement”.
