Intel: Chip giant warns consumer demand for PCs is weakening
Mercury News [San Jose, CA] ^ | 8/27/10 | Steve Johnson

In another sign the economic recovery is stalling, Intel -- whose fortunes are a key barometer of the technology sector's health -- cut its forecast for third-quarter sales, citing "weaker than expected demand for consumer PCs in mature markets." The Santa Clara company -- the worlds' biggest chip maker -- said it now expects its revenue for the quarter to range between $10.8 billion and $11.2 billion, compared with its previous prediction of $11.2 billion to $12 billion.

People have plenty of PC power that they haven’t begun to use. Without the endless credit there isn’t a need to get a new PC every 2-3 years for no reason. All that jazz about a consumer driven service economy is coming back in to haunt us all.

I’m not buying anything. The corporations who pulled their manufacturing overseas can pound sand.

* and I’m far from being the only one to be doing this.

The economy must be in bad shape bc Intel came out very recently with guidance, and is already lowering.

Folks are buying mobile devices. Intel is hurting because their chips suck too much power.

I used to build a PC a year. Now I’ve gone almost two years without a new one. It’s my fault.

A good PC should last 5 years with no problem if you keep it cleaned out and up to date.

Consumer demand for everything is down.

People dont have jobs.

Thay are making that old slow computer work for them because they cannot afford a new one.

It has nothing to do with people’s wants it has to do with their financial problems.

i think its because theres diminishing return in speed/performance above dual core. Once you get the best dual core chip, theres no point getting more core chip because very little software on the market make use of it

My primary PC still has a couple of parts from my first PC bought in 1992. The main one is the floppy drive and there’s an ISA card also left over.

What seems ironic, is that while the overall computer market has been softening, Apple’s computer sales (leaving out the “iDevices”) has stayed on the growth side. Regardless of what one thinks of Jobs and Apple, they are currently quite successful.

But another factor - budget-PCs, particularly netbooks, have saturated the market. So many retailers with blow-out pricing over the last several months have filled the need...

Add to that, corporations are holding out on investing in new computer hardware right along with other areas of capital investments... too much uncertainty.

And as someone else has already posted - the rapid hardware upgrade cycle that fed a lot of growth not-so long ago has hit a roadblock - called tighter credit.

i think the hardware development have outpaced software developement. The best pc games on the market run really well on old 3 year pc. Whats the point of me upgrading? I remember in my younger days, I have to get the best pc to play the newest games otherwise everything lags

I bould a bunch of used Dells on Ebay when I needed to
add some extra systems to my lab. 400 bucks buys you a
pretty good system with a G of memory and 3Ghz cpu.
You can run Ubuntu or Win 7 on that.

Who the Hell is going to buy a new computer in this socialist environment? I bought a new Gateway computer with a Phenom AMD processor and I’ll probably keep it until someone invents memory implants or virtual reality or something. In other words, I’m running this baby into the ground.

People mainly bought PCs for email and Internet.

Now they can do that from their cell phone.

Here’s a good thought problem.

The economy becomes so poor that Microsoft goes out of business.

What is the last independent OS that Microsoft sold that does not require verification from Microsoft before it will work? Technically, the home but not professional versions of Windows 2000. But both 2000 and Windows ME were crappy systems.

This means that if you want a good, independent system, that is fully functional for most applications, you need a copy of Windows 98SE, with the unofficial service pack.

Otherwise you will have to go to Linux, unless MAC is still around.
