WASHINGTON President Barack Obama is declaring an end to the U.S. combat role in Iraq after more than seven years of war, saying the country's future now is up to its own people. The president, who opposed the war as a senator, says: "It is time to turn the page."
Comments of the president were released in advance of his prime-time Oval Office speech. ..
Obama says that ending the war is not only in Iraq's interest it is in America's, as well.
In a sign of the domestic troubles weighing on his own nation, Obama reserved part of his war address to campaign for his efforts to revitalize the U.S. economy. He said his "central responsibility as president" is to get people back to work.

All this just as Iran is readying their nuclear reactors.
Why do I get a feeling that it might have been the lesser of 2 evils to have never invaded Iraq and left Saddam to deal with “Ach-MAD-MAN-ijahd?”
Leavign Saddam in would have been suicide. It’s not about him, it’s about his SONS taking over and attacking us. Which is what would have happened. Saddam learned not to mess with the US, but his sons were of a different breed. If Uday had taken over, he would have been the same as his father, only more dissolute. Qusay would have been a complete sociopath and he’s the one who ran his father’s secret police and who knows WHAT else.
I just hope, for the sake of the troops, that hippies don’t spit on them. At least that should not happen.
Oh listen to yourself you flimflam charlatan. Your “central responsibility” is EXCLUSIVELY to yourself, you wounded narcissist liar. Go eat crow, eat crow....We are sick and repulsed by you, can’t you see?
I didn't know he could land a plane on a carrier deck... < / sarc >
No worries. Within a year there will be a new Saddam in charge in Iraq, with a well-trained and well-armed military thanks to the US. Although I think we should be out of Iraq ASAP, now is not the time.
Does that mean that once he turns that page he will STOP blaming Bush for everything??? I am surprised he didn’t blame Bush for his own inability to handle an umbrella in New Orleans or for how he has to keep the heat on the White House to make him feel like he is back in his beloved Hawaii.
Obama is creepy.....
.....This is just another example.
Unfortunately for the world, the next Saddam will probably be a Shiite, not Sunni, muslim; more idealogical, less businesslike.
There will definitely be a page turned come November.
Already happening. Current PM al-Maliki refuses to concede the election and is staying in power with no end in sight. It's only another year or two before everyone gets around to calling him a dictator.
“No worries. Within a year there will be a new Saddam in charge in Iraq, with a well-trained and well-armed military thanks to the US. Although I think we should be out of Iraq ASAP, now is not the time.”
And I bet he will be a Shiite from Iran.
We not only removed Iran's primary military threat, we leave them in the driver's seat to rule Iraq. The whole war was moronic.
I have been preaching this in FR for over a year and many have told me that there is no that a new dictatorship could happen. With all the tribal history of Iraq, democracy will never happen in the short run and the only thing left is another dictatorship unless are willing to commit for a long time.
Democracy will never bring these tribal groups together, only a strong absolute ruler can put a stop to all the intertribal bickering unless we remain there long enough for the Idea of Democracy to get a strong foothold.
All the American lives lost will be in vain if we leave now. We need to stay for a long time, time for the next generation of Iraqis to overcome the tribal thing.
We had to stay in Japan for several generations to overcome the propaganda issued by the war era leaders and this is not much different.
