EPA fines Tesla Electric Motors $275,000 for non-compliance
Posted on August 31, 2010 by Anthony Watts
In bureaucracy, truth is often stranger than fiction. A non polluting electric car company gets slammed with fine for non compliance for a car that cant produce any emissions.
Thats weird enough by itself, but even weirder is what else is in the companys Securities and Exchange Commission report under what they cite as risks.
Heres the relevant page of the report where they talk about risks, including the $275,000 fine from the EPA. Note what is highlighted under that.
They headline that with:
We are subject to substantial regulation, which is evolving, and unfavorable changes or failure by us to comply with these regulations could substantially harm our business and operating results.
Thats right, a zero emissions green electric car company cites this as a risk to the companys business future:
the imposition of a carbon tax or the introduction of a cap-and-trade system on electric utilities could increase the cost of electricity;
You can see the Telsa SEC 10Q report for yourself at: http://www.faqs.org/sec-filings/100813/TESLA-MOTORS-INC_10-Q/#ixzz0yDhK9ON3
Teslas crime? Failing to file for a 2009 emissions Certificate of Conformity from the EPA to comply with the Clean Air Act. until late in the year. Wait, I thought electric cars were supposed to help clean the air?
Damned if you do, damned if you dont. It is a wonder that anybody would bother even trying to do business anymore where the minefield of bureaucracy looms even for popular and politically correct green companies in California.
Obama's EPA sees no problem with that...
EPA deadbeat should be taken out to the desert for a coyote vacation!!!!
Ask the Maricopa county junior college system.
Edison’s Medicine !
Government makes huge investment in Tesla and EPA takes it away via fines. Makes perfect sense to me. It’s not like Tesla was going to do anything useful with that money.
They’re not paying off the right politicians, race pimps or union officials.
The crazier part is the cost of filing the paperwork, with all the required studies, experts, etc. is probably much greater than $275K.
I put bread and butter on my table by helping my corporation figure out how to navigate through the myriad of rules and regulations from federal, state, and local environmental organizations that apply to our different manufacturing locations throughout the U.S. (and Canada, Mexico, South America, and Europe).
To say the effort is bizarre undertaking is an understatement.
Where does the EPA get its power? Where in the constitution does it grant the EPA the authority to levy fines, create laws, rules....
If I were King for a day, I would abolish all federal agencies not expressly required in the constitution and give the power back to the states.
I know, just dreaming.....
you forgot Government Motors. This is what happens when government becomes business. Can anyone say Chevy Volt?
The EPA is a demonic, evil group that must be dismantled and discarded.
Tesla’s crime? Doing business in the United States under the communist Ubanga regime.
You know.......I just came from Lowe’s, looking to buy windows. My installer now has to perform a lead test mandated by the EPA prior to installing. If lead is detected, the cost goes up $50 per window.
So I says, “when did they stop putting lead in paint?”
Even tho my home was built in 73, I got to pay for this test. Even if my home was built in 1990 and I wanted to replace windows, I got to pay for this test.
What $hit. Eff Ruckelshaus and Carson....A$$holes
Well, the rules is the rules. Well maybe not.
“The EPA, determined to move forward anyway, is attempting to rewrite the Clean Air Act administratively”

It seems the EPA is willing to change the rules if it means empowering themselves but not if it just means cleaner air and a cleaner environment.
Just a warning shot fired by totalitarian, government motors collectivists and their lackeys. Why is there only 1 viable car company headquartered in the western hemisphere?
No kidding. Just how much of that bailout did Tesla get?
