This policy of Japan's is rarely mentioned and was the reason for various & now much maligned anti-immigration laws passed here in the US.

There is always another side to the history the left uses to beat Americans over the head with.

Let’s also not forget that the BIG immigration law of 1924 explicitly limited immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. The Chinese exclusion act and Gentleman’s Agreement with Japan were passed earlier. Interestingly enough, Mexican immigrants were all but allowed free passage over the southern border, with the 1930s being the first time that action was taken against illegals from Mexico (due to the depression).
