On November 11, 1941, just as the German army was poised just outside the gates of Moscow, Adolf Hitler hubristically announced that the coming new Aryan world order would be a green one, “but there is one thing I can predict to eaters of meat, that the world of the future will be vegetarian!” Here, Hitler goes far beyond the idea of individual taste and preference. On this particular evening, while Army Group Center was engaged in an all out battle on the frostbitten Russian front, Hitler contemplates an eco-fascist vegan goal demanded of all as one of the major fruits of victory. Shockingly, both he and Himmler actually had plans to make the new greater Germany vegan after the war. Himmler himself had even recently begun to fancy organic farming. He was planning on feeding his SS troops with a hearty, organic diet perfectly suitable to those who were to be closest to nature to keep them strong and healthy. The harsh realities of the Russian Front, however, required that such Nazi goals would have to be shelved until after the war. Such a totalitarian green agenda and the fighting of a war of almost apocalyptic proportions was simply too much to bear all at once. Indeed, just a few months later, after the Wehrmacht had suffered a catastrophic, icy defeat in the battle of Moscow, Hitler felt compelled to reassure Navy Admiral Fricke that he would not forbid the consumption of meat and that vegetarianism was not a cardinal doctrine of National Socialism. He then went on to give him a lecture on the merits of vegetarianism and how much cattle pastures take away land that could otherwise be used for growing vegetables. .

In the same way, the lion shows sign of fatigue after covering only two or three kilometers, while the camel marches for six and seven days before his tongue even begins to hang out.” Such were the detailed observations of the Fuhrer during the height of war.

Some have been quick to point out that Hitler apparently cheated on occasion with ham, sausage, and seafood dishes. Hitler was also inconsistent with regard to environmental preservationist values and practices, largely because of the need to place Germany on an all out war footing throughout the 1930’s in a vast economy busting arms buildup. Hitler was also a fond of grand building projects National Socialism style and was planning on exploiting the natural resources in the East as much as possible to win the war. However, with great interest indeed, Hitler attributed his vegetarianism to the famous German opera composer Richard Wagner who provided the musical background to the Nazis. Why, one might ask? Because Wagner preached a racist socialism based on vegetarianism that would cleanse Germany from the Jews. Wagner was a revolutionary anti-Semite who hated the Jews for commercializing art.
More importantly is that Wagner was also an ardent student of the great German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer blamed the Jews for animal cruelty since Genesis 1 unabashedly teaches that man was made in God’s image, and hence commissioned to rule over nature, “the fault lies with the Jewish view that regards animals as something manufactured for man’s use.” Schopenhauer, perhaps the original animal rights guru of Europe, was appalled by the fact that John the Baptist wore animal skins. He was also Hitler’s favorite philosopher. Wagner was also an avid reader of Ernst Haeckel’s Social Darwinian ecology that was extremely popular in Germany in the latter half of the 1800’s. While Hitler eschewed some of Haeckel’s political views, his Germanic Social Darwinism would become the racist ‘scientific’ foundation upon which National Socialism was built. Moreover, Schopenhauer and Haeckel were also enthusiastically read by Hitler’s spiritual father, Dietrich Eckart. Thus, Wagner’s strong interest in both of these avant-garde German scholars would all but guarantee that in spite of Hitler’s inconsistency on green socialist issues, environmental themes would still play an important role in National Socialism. Hitler himself asserted that, “whoever wishes to comprehend National Socialism must first know Richard Wagner.” .

That the first noteworthy political accomplishment of National Socialism was the 1933 passage of an animal rights law should thus come as no surprise. As a part of the law, Jewish ritual slaughter related to Passover was henceforth forbidden. This was certainly the Romantic fruit of Schopenhauer’s prophetic thesis in the 1800’s that Europe owes “the animals not mercy but justice, and the debt often remains unpaid in Europe, the continent that is permeated with the odor of the Jews … it is obviously high time in Europe that Jewish views on nature were brought to an end … the unconscionable treatment of the animal world must, on account of their immorality, be expelled from Europe!”
More shocking still is how literal Hitler took this ‘prophecy’ to heart. In fact, in the horrific Nazi documentary film “The Eternal Jew”, the Jewish ritual slaughter of cattle and sheep was graphically shown right at the climax of the film to heighten its effect. Neither does it fail to mention that the Mosaic Law has “no love or respect for animals in the Germanic sense.” After dwelling at great length on the blood and gore, the documentary film then finally reveals Hitler for the first time and lauds his efforts on the passage of Nazi animal rights legislation. From here, the film shades into Hitler’s infamous 1939 speech where he howls before an overzealous Nazi audience that he is about to send the Jews into an unimaginable hell if they start another world war. That the Jews would soon be treated like cattle and experimental animals in the green Nazi hell that was the holocaust was thus no coincidence or oversight. The Nazis took upon themselves the sadistic responsibility of literally fulfilling Schopenhauer’s ghastly prophecy – the most extreme caricature of environmental ethics put to its ultimate anti-human test. . The fact of the matter is that the Nazis adopted an extreme literal reading of Nature. More than a few Nazi ideologues characterized Nazi ideology as “politically applied biology.” They were thus naturist fundamentalists. Since biology is a part of ecology, what the Nazis meant with regard to politically applied biology was that nature was to have primacy over politics and the economy. Biology and ecology were thus everywhere applied socially and politically. This of course would have devastating consequences with regard to the Jews in particular. To many Nazis, the great sin of modern international civilization, which was characterized as Jewish Bolshevism in the East and Jewish Capitalism in the West, was its incessant concern in trying to overcome nature according to Judeo-Christian values. Such an endeavor Hitler called “Jewish nonsense.” In the eyes of the Nazis, this self defeating effort would finally come to an end through National Socialism. Indeed, Germany’s eugenic survival depended upon the success of the indigenous-Aryan-tribal instinct to ‘authentically’ counteract the Judeo-Christian international rebellion against Nature and her Social Darwinian laws.
The Nazis were thus hell bent in ushering a new apocalyptic world order based on the literal application of Nature’s Social Darwinian laws to social and political life. Hence, just like Marxism, which envisaged a secular eschaton of socialistic utopia at the end of history based on the literal socio-economic conditions on the ground, so the Nazis countered them with the much heralded 1,000 year Reich based on literal biology and ecology, which Himmler’s SS especially took to heart with their “Blood and Soil” doctrine. German blood and German soil were principles that were presumed to be according to Nature’s Social Darwinian laws of life that must be adhered to if Nazi Germany was to enjoy the eschaton. While the Marxists, however, viewed the eschaton as more open ended, the Nazis seized upon the 1,000 year Reich as the perfect counterfeit to the whole idea of the 1,000 year Judeo-Christian Millennium predicted in the book of Revelation. Both the Marxists and the Nazis thus extracted from the Judeo-Christian worldview its apocalyptic view of history, yet discarded its sacred and supernatural framework for the latest political and social-scientific-evolutionary fads of the times. In short, whereas the Marxists believed that the eschaton would be realized through the socio-economic dialectical conflict between the capitalists and the proletariat, the Nazis believed that the Aryan Millenium would come about through the application of proper biological eugenics into the fray of Nature’s ecological battles and struggles. Contrary to popular opinion, the Master Race was the best precisely because it was most in tune with the laws of Nature. . He once told his undersecretary Martin Bormann that he will one day become a religious figure. He went on to say, “already Arabs and Moroccans are mingling my name with their prayers. Amongst the Tartars I shall become Khan. The only thing of which I shall be incapable is to share the sheik’s mutton with them. I’m a vegetarian, and they must spare me their meat!” . I was aware of these enthusiasms Hitler had for ecology and the green movement but wasn’t aware of the extent to which they drove his politics and entire worldview.
I also knew that Hitler loved Wagner and stated that in order to understand National Socialism one must understand Wagner, but again I wasn’t really aware of Wagner’s beliefs in this area.
Hitler’s involvement in the occult is well documented and clearly played a role in these demonic belief systems he subsequently developed. It’s the same root that has driven nature worship throughout the ages.

For example, one can find websites by atheists that "prove" Hitler was religious (though he really was anti-religous, at least anti-Christian and anti-Jewish) because of the number of statements in public speeches he made referring to God or Christianity.
And early in the Nazi era, certain clergymen (including some key Lutheran bishops and Roman Catholic cardinals) gave him support--and were photographed giving the "heil Hitler" sign--(after all, he alone seemed to be bringing Germany out of the terrible social/economic depression after WWI).
Of course we know from records of private conversations that Hitler despised Christianity nearly as much or more as he did Judaism--and was at most an agnostic, but functionally atheistic, and therefore without conscience.

Most the National Socialists were pantheists along the lines of Ernst Haeckel’s Monism (early word for Social Darwinism). Martin Bormann bellowed “when we National Socialists speak of a belief in God, we do not mean what naïve Christians and their clerical expositors have in mind ... the power of Nature’s law is what we call the omnipotent force or God.”

Hitler was far more secular than some other leading Nazis like Hess and Himmler. Hilter in fact often made fun of Himmler’s pagan mysticism, and was sometimes very annoyed by it.
National Socialism emphasized the “fatherland” rather than Mother Nature. Their environmentalism was therefore a chauvinistic brand of green ala Jack London - Social Darwinism and the Call of the Wild. In fact, the modern green cult of the wolf was born in Nazi Germany. Hitler liked to be called “Uncle Wolf.”
