(CNN) -- The U.S. commander in Afghanistan on Monday criticized a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on September 11, warning the demonstration "could cause significant problems" for American troops overseas.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday.
The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, plans to mark the anniversary of al Qaeda's September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington by burning copies of the Muslim holy book. The church insists the event is "neither an act of love nor of hate," but a warning against what it calls the threats posed by Islam.
The event has drawn criticism from Muslims in the United States and overseas, with thousands of Indonesians gathering outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday to protest the planned Quran burning.
"The burning is not only an insult to the holy Quran, but an insult to Islam and Muslims around the world," said Muhammad Ismail, a spokesman for the hard-line Indonesian Muslim group Hizb ut-Tahrir.

David, there is one problem. It is called the First Amendment to the US Constitution. If burning a US flag is protected free speech, burning the vile words of a pedophile pirate certainly is, too.
Alternative: use as TP (comes now in 2-ply, I understand).
Too much crap. It’ll plug things up!
What's wrong with this picture?
We still have the right to get wee-weed up and act stupidly, like flag burning, or burning the bible - or burning a Koran, or speaking out against infusion of Shari'a Law in the US legal system. Freedom and freedom of speech is a wonderful thing that the Taliban doesn't want or want to even understand. Gen Petraeus (who the left just recently called Gen Betray-us) is sworn to ensure WE keep our freedoms, and should not be acting to dilute them.
But "stupid" or "insensitive" is still a right (like building a mosque where the landing gear crashed from flight 93 after the "pilot" exclaimed Allahu Akbar). It seems the Taliban (and radical groups like it) are insulted that we even exist - no matter what we do - and some folks fall all over themselves kissing up to the likes of the Taliban.
You would think the folks that are supposed to defend our right to be free would take a different stand, but PC seems to trump the Bill of Rights sometimes.
I’m speechless. This is very disquieting.
Screw winning hearts and minds. Buy them off or kill them off. It's the Afghan way.
Wonder if the liberals who cite the constitution to defend the 911 mosque will also defend the right to burn the quran? I am sick of the whole world kowtowing to Islam for any perceived slight. Let the chips fall where they may, then deal out any necessary punishment to radical muslims swiftly and harshly.
Too late, already torched em ... started the fire with bacon grease
They can hate me all they want... makes it easier for me to issue my FATWAM (f all them weird ass mooslims)
Too bad Craigslist can’t advertise my 72 Virgin Dating Service anymore. In this economy ya have to go where the money is.
So,,,Are we supposed to do as they say, or tell them where to go?
Bowing to their demands is admitting defeat, and the beginning of succumbing to shariah law.
BURN ‘EM IF YA GOT ‘EM!!!
Why should Muslims blame all Christians for the irresponsible acts of a few? After all, we are not to blame all Muslims for the numerous unspeakable atrocities committed by a “few” Muslims.
I would but don't have a Koran and am not about to spend one miserable Obamadime to buy one. Now how do I resolve this?
