The bush taxis in Kenya (”matatus”) used to be so packed that we joked about all of the folks in the middle being protected in case of a crash.

I was in a Matatu with 21 in the back, 3 on the rear bumper and 4 in the front seat.

What is a “Matatu”?

In this case it was a small Toyota pickup with a shell over the bed. A full matatu this size would have about 35 people in it.

Many years ago I had a client who had a trucking company. One of his drivers rearended a station wagon filled to the brim with passengers. All of them, save one, disappeared into the bushes. The one who was in the back claimed to be the driver and sole occupant of the car.

Later, when they found out there was money involved, the illegals came out of the woodwork. One who had fled to Mexico due to an outstanding felony warrant sent a letter asking for his check. We told him it was waiting for him at an FBI office in Florida and never heard back from him.

Here in Arizona we call this a “Bean Spill”...anytime a van crashes with a $hitload of illegal aliens in it. This type of thing happens fairly regularly...and the best part about it is for any injured Mexicans, Arizona taxpayers get to cover their medical costs!
