Democrats: Economy better now than it was before Obama By Michael O'Brien - 09/07/10 01:29 PM ET

The economy is in a better position now than it was when President Obama took office, Democrats argued Tuesday.

The White House and a top congressional leader made the case that the economy has improved under Democratic control of government, though polls showed voters are less convinced.

"I think by virtually any measure, our economy is a better place than it was two years ago," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said at his daily briefing.

The assertion came amid new polls showing confidence slipping in Democrats' ability to handle the economy.

Forty-six percent of U.S. adults said they trust Republicans to handle the economy, compared to 43 percent who trust Democrats, according to a CNN/Opinion research poll released Tuesday. That's a reversal from just a year ago, when Americans trusted Democrats, 53-39 percent, over Republicans to handle the economy.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the chairman of House Democrats' campaign committee, said that while the economy was fragile, it was still improved.

"We're a lot better off than we were 18 months ago, but we're not where we want to be," he said Tuesday morning during an appearance on CNN.

Ok, with Bush, even with a commie legislature, the highest unemployment was about 5.5%, maybe it hit 6 in Dec 2008, but that was it, and the reason it went that high was because of the actions of the Demwit legislature, not the Republicans. It is now at 9.6(really much higher but that is the “official number”)and these clowns are saying we are better off? Tell that to the millions who can’t find work right now you dumb a**ed hypocrites.

Yes and no and it’s not due to the fed.

My state taxes are higher thanks to Coupe Deval. But I also got a raise at work (one of the few who still actually have a job).

"I think by virtually any measure, our economy is a better place than it was two years ago," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said at his daily briefing.

Ten percent unemployment and a public debt that is astronomical. Other than that things are great!

It’s been four years since the Democrats took control of both the House and the Senate.

Well, two of my kids were working under Bush.

They are both struggling to find work under Obama.

What’s this better economy crap?

And go back to 2006 before democrats took over congress and compare numbers from then and now ... if you want to see what a democrat-run government can do for the economy. Obama’s just the accelerant.

I've said this till I was blue in the face to Obozo supporters - all I received in return were blank looks on their faces. They just can't register the truth.

This will be the next big leftist push.

Watch for dozens of DNC Media articles claiming that the economy is now improving as the MalAdministrations policies “take hold.”

The economy started to tank when Pelosi took the House in '06.

Sure did, and the documentary evidence to support that has been posted here, many times.

You just have to admire the utter gall of Democrats, who can stand up in public and spew such lies in the face of documented evidence to the contrary.
