The birth rate is falling, the birth rate is falling!
In case you missed recent headlines, the U.S. birth rate has declined for two years running, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
A national panic about a population drop-off would be premature at this point, but it’s a statistic worth monitoring in coming years. 3 0 0Share
The birth rate in 2007 — 4,317,119 — was the highest ever recorded in the United States. The rate declined modestly in 2008 and continued its decline in 2009 to 4,136,000, according to preliminary data from NCHS.
In Pennsylvania, the number of births decreased by more than 3,000 from 2007 to 2009.
If this trend continues, America will have to face the facts on its inability to fund its aging population even faster than expected — or else revisit the nation’s immigration policy.
The favored explanation for the recent decline is that “it’s the economy, stupid.”
There’s truth to that belief. Research on trends in past recessions shows there is a link between birth rates and the economy. More recently, a 2009 Pew Center study found that 14 percent of Americans ages 18-34 and eight percent of those ages 35-44 have postponed having a child because of the recession. These numbers could grow if the economy does not turn around.
That said, there are notable exceptions to the doom and gloom. The birth rate for women in their early 40s rose during this period. And local maternity wards are preparing for an increase in arrivals in October and November, a phenomenon attributed to the February blizzard and frequent snowfalls last winter.
For many adults considering parenthood, the expectations are high. Raising a child in a good home with caring parents is no longer enough.

Western societies in general are experiencing declining birth rates which will - if unchecked - lead to the decline & extinction of the West.
Bill Clinton announced at a university a few years ago that by 2050 whites will be the minority. The mostly all white audience cheered this news. I can’t figure how you’d want your own race to be outnumbered especially if you have children or grandchildren.
This stuff is concerning. I have 7 so I figured that I am really maxed out. I have a very liberal thought on family. I think people should not be harassed about the size of their family.
I get a kick out of shocking people with my family but the sad truth is that a few decades ago it would not have been unusual. I think I feel worse when other people get comments because I know it hurts some peoples feelings. Me, I don’t have feelings.
So if you only want one, that is fine and if you want 10+ I hope you have a ball.
Why does this article not mention the illegals having a whole slew of kids? Take a look at the Hispanic families and see how many kids they have. I don’t believe the birth rate is lowering when you factor in illegals. And since our governemnt is not going to do anything about illegals, then the population will grow.
Isn't that quite a bit to late in life to have kids? Especially with the highly increased risk of birth defects, etc...?
The vast majority of Hispanic families I know are just as small as "Anglo" families... Then again, I don't really know any poor _Mexican_ families..
This is no doubt due to the years of propaganda which demonizes the White race because it is quite frightening to hear so many people regurgitate the nonsense that White people are “the most evil people” by simply pointing to the crimes of States & governments. All races have committed horrible crimes but the MAIN perpetrator of crimes & the main killer of peoples have always been States & government.
