Boehner Offers Concession on Tax Cuts
WSJ ^

Posted on 09/09/2010 9:30:46 AM PDT by roses of sharon

House GOP Leader John Boehner offered a concession on tax cuts, suggesting Republicans would accept a two-year extension of all the Bush-era tax breaks rather than the permanent extension they have been seeking.

The GOP proposal is an alternative to Democratic leaders’ plan to allow the top two rates to rise next year to pre-Bush levels. A Republican release described Boehner’s alternative as a way to prevent “job-killing tax hikes” on small businesses.

I don’t know. Keep the tax cuts alive for two more years, and then they’ll have a Republican majority. Might be possible to make them permanent.

I’m not that fond of Boehner, but he may be right on this.

He'll no, Boehner must go!
And he needs to take Can'tor with him.
Mike Pence for Speaker of the House.
Tom McClintock and Thadeus McCotter to fill out the House leadership.

Exactly!!!! Boehner’s memory isn’t very accurate when the dems totally excluded the Repubs from any participation the past 18 months....I guess Bohener’s plan is to reach across the table and make them feel comfortable when the dems lose so heavily this November???

I disagree here... this makes sense to me. Agree to a limited 2 year extension of the Bush Tax cuts for all. That should make it hard for the Dems not to go along with since there’s a compromise and then in 2012 when BO is out.. you make them permanent.

I like it. It looks like a concession to those not paying attention, but it doesn't concede anything. You appear to be reasonable, but in the end you get what you want. It protects the Bush tax cuts for the rest of Obama’s term. And gives the GOP something to fight for in 2012.

For what POSSIBLE reason?

There is ONLY one “possible” reason.

SABOTAGE!

They do not WANT to win that big and then HAVE to do it.

They prefer to be forever dominated like sissies.

Actually, I think he’s being clever.

First he starts out with the “let’s make them permanent” position, which he knows they’ll never go for. Make them come out publicly for raising taxes.

Then, “compromise”, by making it a 2-year extension (especially when he’s pretty certain the GOP will have the majority in less than half a year). Might peel off some of the “blue dogs”, but for the most part make them come out publicly for raising taxes, again.

I expect he’ll then try “how about 1 year?” to make them yet again come out publicly in favor of tax increases.

All the while, he looks reasonable and bipartisan, and they won’t budge.

heh heh heh....so they will be ready to expire again and again become the #1 issue when Obama and the Congress are up again in ‘12. Excellent!!!

But, the proposal would go until 2012, when a Republican president would sign a bill making the Bush un-taxes permanent. No obama veto.

” ... House GOP Leader John Boehner offered a concession ... “

Get ready for many, many more repetitions of this phrase in the coming months if Boehner remains a “Leader”!

Hmmm....how is this a cave? extend the current status quo and take R credit for it in this election cycle. Seems like he is standing up for eventually making them permanent, and knowing the Dems, they wont go along anyway.

I am not sure what the complaints on this thread from “conservatives” are about. But some folks are so (rightfully) mad, they dont see a good thing when it occasionally occurs.

Do Democrats ever concede anything? No, they endlessly demand concessions from the Republicans, whom they accuse of being extremists.

And when the GOP leadership caves, are they rewarded by the Democrats? No, the Democrats accuse them of being unprincipled and immediately plan how to get the rest of what they wanted in the first place...chiefly by accusing Republicans of being extremists.

I've seen this movie already and I didn't like how it ended.

Most, if not all GOP leaders need to resign and hand the reins over to those who will actually fight for something other than an office with a window.

It also works to diffuse the "party of No" crap that Obama is planning to spew between now and November. I think you're right...this buys time until an R Congress can make these permanent (and maybe deeper).

He may have said this just to make the president look unreasonable.

I wouldn’t read too much into this.
