GAINESVILLE The pastor of a Gainesville church said late this afternoon that he is canceling plans to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday.
In return, Dove World Outreach Center Pastor Terry Jones said, he's been assured that the controversial Islamic center planned near Ground Zero in New York City will be moved elsewhere.
But no such agreement exists, said Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, who has met with Jones repeatedly in the past couple of days seeking to defuse the situation. And CNN reported that the developer of the New York project is denying any plans to move.
All that exists, Musri said, is an agreement for Jones to meet with New York Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, leader of the proposed mosque near Ground Zero.
Jones said he had received assurances from Musri that the New York project would be moved.
But Musri, speaking right after Jones at a news conference outside the church, had a slightly different take.
"What I said was that if it were up to me, it would be moved tomorrow," Musri told reporters after Jones had gone back inside. "Right now, we are in the preliminary stages of our discussion.
"We do not have the commitment to move," he said. "We have a commitment to meet."

I have a feeling that if this mosque isn’t moved after this...Qurans will be burned all across America.
A failed or sham deal could “inflame” the entire debate.
You got it!!!

PREDICTION: The pastor calls off the Koran burning.
The mosque isn’t moving!!!!!!!!!
This almost has the feel of the Cuban Missile Crisis playing out.
One wrong move...
Sounds like a fig leaf for the pastor who started this. It’s him and his congregation against the press and a lot of rich muslims.
This man may not burn a koran on saturday but believe me there will be thousands b urned that day.
Youtube mods are sure going to be busy that day with the delete buttons.
Fox News Radio just said that the pastor is the “only one saying that” there is any kind of agreement to stop the building of the Ground Zero Victory Mosque. Mrs. Imam has said there is NO agreement.
The pastor is probably very, very confused. After all, he just had a phone call from Pillsbury Spokesboy Robert Gibbs and is very likely still trying to make sense out of what Gibbs said (you know, like everyone else who listens to him).
OK, now that this guy has caved (who cares why), my question is this:
How many FReepers will burn a copy, videotape it, and post it somewhere online? in multiple places? here on FR?
If they came after the good Reverend, will they come after us?
I look forward to any responses. The answer to this question needs to be discussed.
Thanks.
If I were to use profane language I say it was a cluster....
The backing out begins.
The idiot pastor just gave up all of his leverage.
The Detroit Lions have a better shot of winning the Super Bowl, than the Imam agreeing to move the mosque.
Wanna bet?
Sounds like Pastor Terry is going to meet the sword.
tru dat
“What I said was that if it were up to me, it would be moved tomorrow,” Musri told reporters after Jones had gone back inside.
Whoa, for a minute there I thought it was Bill Clinton...
Muslim thy name is duplicity.
This is getting very interesting now it appears the shoe is on the other foot.... If the Mosque is built it now puts our troops in danger because subsequently Korans will be burnt.... WOW... I wonder if we can get Patreaus to speak out on this issue now.... Building the mosque at ground zero will get our troops killed. Wonder what Obama has to say about it now?
This is the best outcome we could have hoped for...Pastor Jones should go on every show and say that Imam Rauf promised to move the mosque, whether Rauf did or did not. Then they will HAVE to move the mosque, and if they don’t even the media will slam him for bad faith. BRILLIANT!
