WASHINGTON (AP) -- Military bases across the U.S. have banned the sale of a new video game that lets a player pretend to be a Taliban fighter and "shoot" U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

"Medal of Honor" by Electronic Arts, a major game developer based in Redwood City, Calif., hits stores Oct. 12. Gamers are scoffing at the decision, saying that advanced technology has made it commonplace in the gaming world to let players switch sides and play the bad guy...

Well, this is certainly not the first video game or war game where one can play the bad guy. Battlefield 1942 has an option that lets you play as Axis, and so on.

At the same time, most of those games either deal with past historical conflicts, or fictional ones. The war in Afghanistan is as real as it gets, and is at its bloodiest stage in years. I can certainly understand why the military wouldn't want it on base.

Btw, someone help me out here...wasn’t there a game a while back that let you play a terrorist, and kill civvies in a Russian airport or something?

Too stupid for words.

For those not familiar with first person shooters, let me explain. The single player campaign of MOH is strictly told from the American point of view with players assuming the roles of multiple characters, all of whom play a role in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Multiplayer however REQUIRES that players be divided into teams. Guess what, the good guys need someone to shoot at, so half of the players in a multiplayer game are assigned (for that match) to the enemy team. The other solution would be to have Army Rangers killing each other, but that would just reek of stupidity and PC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

However, you don’t play a terrorist. In the airport scenario “No Russian” you’re an American operative who’s killed at the end of the end of the level, allowing the Russian mafia who orchestrated the attack to fool the Russian government into believing that it was an attack by the United States government. It sets up the pretext for an imagined Russian invasion which is central to the story line where you kill a gazillion Russians with a variety of weapons.

How many soldiers over there were playing the game? If they didn’t have a problem with it, why should I.

So it IS multiplayer? I couldn’t find that confirmed anywhere. I thought it would be a little in bad taste to do that in the single player campaign, but in multiplayer? Who cares?

None of them b/c it’s not out yet. But once it’s released I’m sure there will be many X360 and PS3 LANs set up to play multiplayer with much trash-talk ensuing.

That's OK, I'm sure Amazon.com will appreciate all the extra business.

As a former active-duty Marine, I THOROUGHLY dislike when "the powers that be" BAN LEGAL items from military bases/PX's or for purchase by military personnel.

Prohibition was pushed by decidedly UN-AMERICAN progressives, and it was WRONG.

"Banning" adult magazines, video games, or WHATEVER LEGAL products from purchase by those that are willing to lay down their lives so that we may be free to make our own free choices in a FREE society is WRONG.
