WTC site gears for solemn hush, and noisy protest, on 9/11

A moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. -- marking the moment on 9/11 when the first hijacked plane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center -- will commence a somber commemoration at Ground Zero today.

Vice President Joe Biden, Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Paterson will attend the ceremony in Zuccotti Park, across Liberty Street from the WTC site, to mark the ninth anniversary of the terror attacks.

Relatives of the dead and workers building the 9/11 Memorial and Museum will read off the names of the fallen, punctuated by moments of silence marking the times when the Twin Towers were hit by the airliners and when they fell.

Memorial pools being built in the footprints of the Twin Towers -- along with the bustle of construction in Ground Zero -- are visible this 9/11. Afterward, things are expected to get much louder blocks away as 4,000 opponents and supporters of the planned mosque two blocks from Ground Zero stage demonstrations.

The opposing sides are set to face off on Park Place between West Broadway and Broadway soon after the official commemoration of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama is speaking at a Pentagon ceremony. Easier to get the teleprompters over there and farther away from the Ground Zero mosque.

I had hoped to visit Ground Zero today but am unable. I am there in spirit.
