Caterpillar Inc. is telling its American employees in Mexico, particularly those with children, to return to the United States because of escalating violence there, the company said Thursday.
About 40 American employees of Caterpillar facilities in Mexico, including in Monterrey, are affected by the company's order. Those employees all are salaried or management, said company spokesman Jim Dugan.
"We have been and will continue to monitor and assess the security situation in Mexico and communicate with our employees in order to improve their safety. Based on recent guidance from the (U.S.) State Department, Caterpillar has informed expat employees in some regions of Mexico, including Monterrey, that they and their families should repatriate as soon as possible," Dugan said.
He added that employees working in those regions who do not have children have the option to continue with an assignment based on each person's situation.
"The company will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate with employees about additional safety and security measures. We have historically had some employees who commute to Mexico for work assignments, and we expect these changes may result in some additional employees following this practice," Dugan said.
He declined to discuss specific incidents of violence or threats.
Dugan said the company has taken action in the past to restrict or ban travel to regions where there is risk of violence or even because of severe weather.
"We have operations and dealers all over the world, so of course we pay attention to such things so we can make sure our people are safe," he said.

This is a good idea.
A friend told me several of the maquiladoras are already completely shut down.
Cat has a large mfg capacity in South America and other parts of the world. In a worse case situation, they coulld transfer manufacturing out of Mexico, but it would be costly.
They better assess whether or not Mexico can win their war with the cartels. If not, they better start making long term plans to leave.
I don’t see a lot of hope for Mexico.
Could not determine how many workers Caterpillar employs worldwide; but the company has a fascinating history. I had no idea.

Rachel Corrie is deeply saddened.
She’s flat devastated actually.
To understand what’s happening in Mexico, you have to really go back to the bloody days of the Mayans and Aztecs, and then to the Spanish conquistadors, and then to Pancho Villa. Mexico is simply a Hispanic version of Haiti.
These people are management or btter paid employees.
Does having them leave Mexico mean they would need to look for jobs? Is Cat really worried about their safety or can they save money if they use this excuse to basically fire them? Does this eman that these people are no longer needed in Mexico, and this is a slimy way of getting rid of them.
Once Obama's border erasure (aka "amnesty") is passed, Mexico's problems will become our problems. Democrats are hustling to accomplish this as they litigate against the State of Arizona and Sheriff Joe, both attempting to uphold the US Rule of Law vs. the Obama Administration (intent on circumventing the Rule of Law and rewriting it to keep the border wide open and prevent/slow/deter the prosecution and deportation of illegal aliens.)
Mexico's border factories lose jobs to lower-wage countries
Snip: Over the past few years there has been an alarming exodus of factories and jobs to China and other low-cost countries. Mexico's electronics industry is down by more than eight percent. Several high-profile operations, such as one factory owned by the Netherlands-based Philips Electronics, have gone to China. More than 170 factories have closed in Mexico and moved to China in recent years, and some remaining factories have moved part of their operations across the Pacific.
Ciudad Juarez - from boom town to ghost town?
Snip: The fallout has been dramatic. Once among Mexico's most prosperous cities, Juarez has lost 120,000 jobs and 6,000 businesses in two years. Seven maquiladoras have closed. The city's main commercial corridors have been gutted, restaurants, dance clubs and pool halls have been firebombed and hundreds of homes have been abandoned. American tourists, who used to make the 10-minute trip over the border in droves to party and shop, are now a rare sight.
Uh, it's no safer here, guys.
Barry has already ceded parts of America to Mexico, and he's moving the Mexican border north every day.
The typical Mexican on the street is more than a little superstitious, because they had a violent civil war in 1810, and a very violent civil war in 1910. And now it’s 2010.
The war from 1910-20 was so vicious that it has permanently affected their national psyche. Fighters would kill anyone not affiliated with their faction.
Thousands of Yaqui Indians were internally deported on the railroads to the South, where they were to be slaves and worked to death, or even killed for sport. They were only allowed to return to their homeland in the 1940s.
Over 900,000 Mexican refugees fled into the United States, and with the onset of the Great Depression, many were expelled back to Mexico.
It's gone viral in personal emails and Americans who previously didn't know that Obama is ceding the USA to Mexico are now becoming fully apprised. What the media isn't telling its viewers, listeners and readers, the internet is educating them and showing that media (in all formats) cannot be trusted to give them "the news they need to know."
On either side of the border.
What many do not appreciate is that the flood of illegals seeking jobs in the US has hollowed out the workforce in some Mexican states to a point where their communities no longer function effectively.
As far as I’m concerned, the issue of cheap labor was settled in April of 1865 in the US.
Many in the business community can’t seem to get this through their heads.
“Mexico is simply a Hispanic version of Haiti.”
Exactly.
Gee, for a minute I misunderstood the meaning of the word "cat":
Cheers!
Arpaio for President 2012 !
How’s that NAFTA thingy working out for ya now, boys!
