Millennials vs. boomers: Give up the reins, you geezers
Times Herald Record Middletown, NY ^ | 9/12/10 | Timothy Malcolm

Posted on 09/12/2010 3:39:09 PM PDT by Impala64ssa

My friends all wait.

They wait to make use of their degrees. They wait for a job to open. They wait to finish graduate school. Again.

They all wait. The economy stinks. It stunk before we started earning salaries. The job market is nonexistent. Even small colleges are filled up. The technology we mastered as curious children is sitting there, but we can't do anything with it. No, it's too busy. It's being used by you people.

And the jobs? You people. The schools? Again, you people. You baby boomers. You're why we're waiting.

Like every generation before us, my generation has gone to school. Most of us are dangling our feet in our parents' homes while boomers continue to work so they can make money. And put off retirement. And attempt to keep the economy afloat — you know, the economy the boomers ruined.

Lately, some critics have concluded that the current 20-somethings are delaying their careers, staying at home and relying on mommy and daddy because they're lazy, or disinterested, or scared of social commitment.

I disagree, and profoundly.

The main reason we 20-somethings still sleep at mom's house is because mom and dad won't get out of the work force. They're clogging the pipeline.

Baby boomers make up the largest generation in American history. The current 20-something generation is almost as large, ironically, thanks to the boomers having all those kids.

don’t you sometimes wish that our children were like the Chinese who instill respect for their elders??? I do...although my children are Christians and really do respect me. But I see, all around me, evidence of this not happening to others... and it breaks my heart.

Being a Christian, this will strike home with you.

2 Tim 3
1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Or the Boomer presidents of Clinton, Bush and Obama.

All three of which were voted in by Boomers.

FAIL.

Yeah and when I get turned down for a minimum wage job, I guess I’ll have to chalk it up to an ‘entitlement’ mentality?

I’ve been working my butt off since I was 15. No student loan, paid off my school by working and saving.

I think I have a right to complain that there are no opportunities out there. I didn’t vote for the O, and I know plenty of the boomers who did.

He & his kind are all after these cerebral, creative professions. They’re all paying off student loans for “Womyn’s Studies” or “Communications.”

There is a reason why folks with such majors don't get the high-paying jobs that folks in engineering, business, and real science majors get.

“Only 11 percent of baby boomers said it would be a good idea to elect someone over 70 years old.”

Yeah, we elected him. Right.

Gee thanks again Boomers for screwing us over again.

Whole factories uprooted and reassembled over there.

Both of my family's cars (foreign brands, too) were assembled in the United States.

There are factories still here in the United States, however, their manufacturing processes are more heavily dependent on technology and automation rather than on on direct human labor, since human labor is expensive in the U.S. relative to places like China, Pakistan, Indonesia, etc. The problem is that in order to operate such technologies, one must have a solid grounding in basic math, reading, writing, etc. Unfortunately, the U.S. K-12 and higher education systems have focused far too much on pumping out individuals with mere credentials (diplomas, degrees) not necessarily backed by actual skills, and now many Americans are learning a rather nasty lesson: one's credentials matter naught if there's nothing of substance behind them.

“...but even the youngest of the Boomers won’t reach 65 until next year.”

If the last year of the Boomer generation is 1964, then those born in that year will not be 65 until 2029!

Hate to break it to ya, ya stupid millenial...

...but when the Boomers leave, it’ll be Generation X that get to hold the reins, not *YOU*.

And after Generation X will be Generation Y.

So you’ll be whining and *STILL* sitting on yer @ss for most of your life. Eh, but what else is new?

You can complain all that you want, but blaming boomers is not going to get you a job. That was the point of my reaction to the topic. I do not know you, but I suspect that if you look at the decisions that you have made and are making, you made a bad decision along the way. Many students make the mistake of majoring in subjects that are not attractive for employment. The days of just having a degree is not going to cut it. Again, I do not know your situation, but there are plenty of jobs available; however, you may have to be willing to start from the bottom and move to find them.

Which is why I moved. I have a degree in history where I should be able to get into teaching. Just need to save up the money to pay for the certification.

I’ve not been picky about work. I just run into ‘overqualification’ all the time, which is really frustrating. How on earth am I to get in at the bottom if I can’t get my foot in the door?

Sorry, ths was part of a longer sentence that I cut carelessly and I meant oldest of the boomers! (Assuming the "Boomer" generation to start in 1946.) A slight difference...

Isn’t this the generation that voted overwhelmingly for Obama? Elections have consequences. Learn it!!!

Start your own business. It’s too hard because of government regulations and taxes?

Take the government down to it’s constitutional limits, enact a flat tax and stop voting for progressive’s in moderate’s clothing.

I know what it is like to lose a job, and it is no fun. My youngest daughter is working on a degree in English literature. I keep asking her what is she going to do with a degree in English lit? She has yet to give me an answer. My other children earned degrees in the medical field, and they have never had a problem finding employment. I wish you the best of luck. You are still young, and things will get better.

The millenials are the boomers kids, and they display every bad characteristic of the boomers, and nearly none of the good.

The millenials elected a “president” who squandered the greatest economy in world history in 2 short years.
