Obama sends pick for Medicare post back to Senate

President Barack Obama resubmitted his pick to run the Medicare and Medicaid programs to the Senate on Monday, two months after bypassing the body with a recess appointment.

In July Obama appointed health expert Donald Berwick to run the programs that provide healthcare to seniors and the poor after his Senate confirmation was held up by Republicans, who expressed worries that he would ration healthcare as a way to reduce costs.

The president has the power to fill top federal vacancies that would normally require Senate approval while the body is in recess.

A desperate political move, and another sign that Obama has been neutered.

Yup, he can get confirmation now but he won't be able to later......BUT now we will have hearings on how wretched this bill (and the nominee) actually is.

He knows that Berwick will not make it past a filibuster in the new congress. Maybe newly seated Senators in IL,CO,DE,FL and WV will not let this pass either.

This is designed to circumvent the recess appointment situation. As it now stands, Berwick’s appointment ends at the end of 2011. However, if the O sends him through the regular confirmation process, he’s in for the rest of his presidency.

The O knows that Berwick might have trouble with the Senate next year so they are obviously trying to push through a regular confirmation before it is too late.

Will this sub-human monster be questioned by Republicans BEFORE the election?

If so, the democrats are going to lose most of the senior votes.

Sub-human monster??? Oh please...

The law is a monstrosity, and I don’t agree with Berwick’s politics, but this characterization of him is way out of line and uncalled for.

Berwick has done more to improve healthcare and patient safety (through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement - www.ihi.org) in the last 10 - 15 years than any other living person and does not deserve such language, whether one agrees with Obama Care or not (and I definitely do not support Obama Care)...

OK. Can you live with hard left ideologue with no apparent understanding of how markets work or respect for the principles that made this a wealthy and prosperous country; and someone that shouldn't be allowed within a country mile of the levers of power?

I don't believe this is the case. Republicans put no holds and employed no dilatory tactics. All they did was express an eagerness to ask the loon a few questions about his love for the British socialized medicine and wealth redistribution. The cowardly Obama couldn't face having this guy's far left views discussed openly.

after his Senate confirmation was held up by Republicans,

Reuters is lying, as the confirmation was never even brought to the committee for a hearing. Reid blocked the nomination, the republicans wanted to have hearings.

“If so, the democrats are going to lose most of the senior votes.”

I can understand Obama wanting to get this done before 2011, since there’s no prospect of getting the nomination through in the new Congress. But he’s shooting himself in the foot to try it now as opposed to during a lame-duck session. The nomination hearings will provide a golden opportunity to stir up more reminders of why the health bill was such a bad piece of legislation.

Indeed, Republicans can put Berwick on the spot regarding provision after provision: “do you support slashing $500B from Medicare?” “do you support the Gator Aid provision?” “According to government projections, Medicare payments to doctors will be 75% below those made by private insurers in 2075. Do you think this is a good idea?”

He’s either going to have to disavow some provisions—raising serious questions about the plan’s costs and deficit neutrality—or he’ll be defending positions that will enrage seniors. All this just weeks before the election—and in plenty of time to create some devastating political ads. Thank you, POTUS!!!

Testicles have to be present in the firstplace for them to be removed in the second place.

I don’t even think NObama is a cryptoid.
