Moscow arms against nuclear attack

Published 12 July, 2010, 21:42

Nearly 5,000 new emergency bomb shelters will be built in Moscow by 2012 to save people in case of potential attacks.

Moscow authorities say the measure is urgent as the shelters currently available in the city can house no more that half of its population.

(I have been wondering if this could be true, do you know? Thanks!)

This is the sort of news article that always make me wonder what they know that we do not. Why the sudden flurry of activity? Do they suspect imminent attack or are they just being prudent in this violent, uncertain world?

Our domestic fallout shelters are woefully under-maintained, if they even exist at all. I can find no local evidence of any fallout shelters remaining that are not in private hands. Our police and fire chiefs will not return my calls or letters on the issue and local hospitals give me the runaround. Even our sheriff has no clue (or is not telling).
