The GOP Must Decide What Party It Wants to Be
Wall Street Journal ^ | 9/14/2010 | Tom Morrison

Posted on 09/14/2010 6:54:50 AM PDT by sefarkas

Although the unfavorable financial trends of the past decade have worsened considerably under the Obama-Reid-Pelosi leadership, tea partiers and other fiscal conservatives no longer see Republican control of Congress as a primary objective. It is arguably more important at this time because there is a Democrat in the White House who, along with Congress, has yanked the nation, kicking and screaming, far to the left. But candidates like Mike Castle, fan of cap and tax, can't be counted on to change the direction of the country. It would be better to let Democrats retain ownership of the Senate and House with razor-thin majorities than to assemble another class of moderate Republicans committed only to their political careers. Tea partiers are as focused on local elections this year as they are on statewide elections, and development of a truly conservative local farm team that can pick up the pieces in Washington later is considered as important as helping pragmatic Republicans achieve short-term gains. There's an old saying in the investment industry that "you can't spend relative performance." It means that, if the stock market is down 20% and your portfolio is down only 15%, you still lost money. Tea partiers want a political party that is absolutely committed to limited government and a substantial rollback of federal spending and entitlements. If that's not politically feasible until the nation is closer to the brink of bankruptcy, so be it. Our most recent generation of Republicans paved the way for progressives to vastly expand the power of Washington under President Obama. There is absolutely no tea party appetite to repeat that mistake.

This is the best description of the Tea Party movement I've seen. This was one of the "Letters to the Editors" in today's print edition of the WSJ.

Can we hear a loud “AMEN” to this excellent letter.
We do not need Castle in the Senate when we have Snowe and Collins to sabotage GOP votes.

"[Hussein], along with Congress, has yanked the nation.... far to the left."

Our most recent generation of Republicans paved the way for progressives socialists, communists, Democrats and other assorted domestic enemies to vastly expand the power of Washington under President Obama.

Fixed.

The letter that followed shows the counter argument to the tea party:

Of all the primaries showcasing the unintended consequences of the tea party candidate defeating the more "pragmatic" GOP candidate, the most persuasive and relevant is in Nevada.

Sen. Harry Reid was facing certain defeat but is now running neck-and-neck with Sharon Angle, who is waging a floundering and incoherent campaign.

If voters follow William F. Buckley Jr.'s wise counsel, it could lead to win-win electoral outcomes on Nov. 2.

Fay Dicker
Lakewood, N.J.

However, I think this is a false argument. If the GOP would stay out of the race until the party candidate is chosen in the primaries, and then back to the hilt the candidate that the GOP rank and file choose, you would not have "damaged" candidates like Angle and O'Donnell.

Kudos to the author!
I am so sick of hearing from family members and “friends” that a Republican by any name is better than no GOP win.
How are we going to seriously create a lasting trend toward getting our country back on track if we vote for Juan McC. type RINOs who “reach across the aisle”?
Mike Castle makes me sick. I don’t live anywhere near Delaware and I contributed to O’Donnell and called for her last night.
And if he does win, do you think he’ll take a lesson from Conservatives discontent with him and move to the right?
When pigs fly...

The Pubbie party is actually two parties:

Pubbie I. Inside the Beltway.
Pubbie II. Outside the Beltway.

Makes a nice Venn diagram.

I hope Mike Castle is defeated today. Those FReepers who resorted to the electability argument to back Castle should be ashamed of themselves. I blame them MORE than Castle for whatever happens. We all KNOW Castle is a scorpion.

http://allaboutfrogs.org/stories/scorpion.html

Haven’t we learned enough from electing the likes of Specter and Jeffords?

There’s a conservative wave rising in the country. The RINOs and their apologists can either ride that wave with us, or they can be smashed against the rocks when the wave rolls over them!

A pox on anyone, including RINO-supporting FReepers, who attempts to thwart, discourage, or otherwise demoralize conservatives in their attempt to reform the Republican Party and change America! To those fighting today to elect conservatives, God speed!

The idea that it is better for conservatives to allow the demonic-rats to control Congress is DEAD WRONG. Every second the demonic-rats are in control moves the Country ever closer to fiscal ruin. Two years from now obama-carelessness will to ingrained to repeal; and who knows what this lame duck Congress may pass.

No one dislikes RINOs more than I; but better a RINO than a full fledged leftist. It is better to take over now, and weed out the RINOs in the future. You will find that even RINOs will develop a spine when held accountable - look at McLame.

The choice facing the GOP is simple: whether it will be the party of the ruling class or the party of liberty.

Every six years, McLame pulls out his Mr. Conservative suit. When his primary is won, the suit goes back into mothballs for another six years, and he goes back to screwing conservatives. That is not accountability.

I'm sure McLame and Graham are already "reaching across the aisle" and drafting a new amnesty bill to shove down our throats.

When your Country Club membership is up for consideration, I'd be happy to offer a letter of support.

In the meantime, read Mr. Morrison's letter again. Even a +10 for the Republicans will not give Conservatives control of the US Senate with the likes of the Maine Senators, McCain, etc. It would be safer to wait for the conservative wave to grow even larger before having to take responsibility for programs promoted by the Democrats and enabled by the weak-willed RINOs.

I happen to believe that the “weak” republicans are actually subversives who are, shall we say, “influenced” to do the democrats bidding. I think a lot of them get elected and then the dems dig up some dirt on them and blackmail them, which is easy since they just want to get paid.

Asshats like Arlen Specter are probably willing subversives that planned to infiltrate the republican party. See Lindsay Graham, Olympia Snowe etc.

The way I see it, there’s no significant difference between a RINO and a Marxist.

The simple essence of each is corruption.

The RINO has no core principles other than personal gain.

Therefore the RINO will embrace marxism when it advances his cause, and this opportunity comes along minute by minute in Washington politics.
