Man Convicted in ’91 Unrest Is Stabbed (Lemrick Nelson, Killer of Yankel Rosenbaum, stabbed)
New York Times ^ | 09/12/2010

A man who was convicted in the stabbing of a Hasidic scholar in racial unrest that engulfed Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1991 was stabbed early Sunday in Upper Manhattan, the police said.

The man, Lemrick Nelson Jr., 35, was found unconscious on an exit ramp of the George Washington Bridge about 2 a.m., according to the Fire Department. He had a stab wound behind his ear, and an ice pick was found nearby. He was taken to Harlem Hospital Center in stable condition.

Investigators were looking into whether Mr. Nelson had been attacked after a traffic dispute, the police said.

The Crown Heights disturbances were set in motion on Aug. 19, 1991, when Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black boy, was struck and killed by a vehicle in the motorcade of the leader of the Lubavitcher Hasidic sect.

The authorities said Mr. Nelson, then 16, was part of an angry crowd of blacks who, not long after the accident, descended upon Yankel Rosenbaum, a 29-year-old scholar from Australia, a few blocks away. Mr. Rosenbaum was stabbed four times and later died.

According to the NY Daily News:

Cops are still hunting for the assailant who stabbed Crown Heights riot figure Lemrick Nelson in the head with an ice pick.

Nelson, who remained in stable condition at Harlem Hospital on Monday, was found lying beside his car on a George Washington Bridge off-ramp in Manhattan at 2 a.m. Sunday.

He was not robbed, so cops think he had a road-rage confrontation with the stabber, who escaped unseen.

The car appeared to have fresh damage, as if it had just been clipped or sideswiped, and the door was open, police said.

Cops also found the ice pick presumably used to stab Nelson, 35.

“Unrest?” a vicious anti-Semitic black mob attack resulting in the murder of an innocent bystander and this is called “unrest.” Oh, it is from the New York Times. Never mind.

This event probably helped to pave the way for Rudy Giuliani to be mayor of New York City.

Then, NYC mayor David Dinkins hesitated to deploy vast numbers of police to stop the rioting because he had been elected as a peacemaker.

During the Crown Heights Riots Mayor David Dinkins stood on the stairs of a police temporary headquarters vehicle and addressed the several hundred police officers who were there for roll call. He stated the reason he had not allowed the police to stop the rioters was that “the community needed to be allowed to vent”.

He stated that he did not want the police to intercede too quickly to avoid escalating the rioter’s behavior.

This strategy proved disastrous. The first night of the riot, Dinkins, along with Police Commissioner Lee Brown, both African Americans, went to Crown Heights to dispel the false rumors about the circumstances surrounding the accident, but they had no impact on the rioters, most of whom were young black men.

The Crown Heights riot was an important issue raised on the campaign trail. Rudy Giuliani, called the Crown Heights riot a “pogrom” because “for three days people were beaten up, people were sent to the hospital because they were Jewish.

Giuliani won by over 44,000 votes. Support for Dinkins by Jews, Hispanics and Puerto Ricans, Asian-Americans, uniformed police officers, and first-time voters decreased significantly from the previous election.

RE: Karma can be a b*tch.

One difference — Yankel is still dead. Lemrick Nelson is still alive.

It is not wisdom but authority that makes the law. - Thomas Hobbes

This violent criminal has discovered what Hobbes wrote in 1651, that without the rule of law, life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short". Sadly, NY abandoned the rule of law when it allowed anti-Semitic murderers to go free after only one year behind bars.

“Support for Dinkins by Jews, Hispanics and Puerto Ricans, Asian-Americans, uniformed police officers, and first-time voters decreased significantly from the previous election.”

However, that same base of support rebounded in time to vote overwhelmingly for the great peacemaker - hey, he scored the Nobel in Peace - now in the White House. Way to go, gang.

Oh my gosh! I saw this on “Law and Order”! I had no idea this had really happened. Should have known it was “ripped from the headlines”.
