Police baffled after man killed in Evanston blast

Police remain puzzled by an explosion early Tuesday morning in an Evanston park that apparently blew the head off of a 21-year-old man and led to the evacuation of area residents and the closure of a nearby school
The body of the man, identified by police as Colin Dalebroux, was found in Fitzsimmons Park next to what police said was a pipe bomb.
Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington said it was still unclear whether Dalebroux, had intentionally taken his own life. No suicide note was found in his garden apartment in Evanston, although FBI forensics experts are examining the man’s computer for clues.
“I’m not really ready to utter that word, but that’s a distinct possibility,’’ Eddington said.
Eddington said Dalebroux had no criminal record but had previous contact with police. Police also said Dalebroux was “known’’ to another police agency but declined to say which agency or why.
Neighbors of Dalebroux said he had lived in his unit only for the past several months.
Peter Wolf said the man was friendly and had a girlfriend.
“They’d smoke out front and talk to me,’’ Peter Wolf said. “He was nice, and I was a little bit jealous of him, because he was young and had a pretty girlfriend.
“He didn’t seem the type of person to do something like this.’’
Others complained of a frequent marijuana smell coming from his unit.
A Facebook page indicates he was a 2008 graduate of Madison West High School, but that could not immediately be confirmed.
At a news conference Tuesday, Evanston Police Commander Tom Guenther said authorities were taking the explosion “extremely seriously.’’
John Shelley, a neighbor who lives across from the Nichols Middle School, said he was dozing off in front of the TV around 4 a.m. when he heard a loud explosion.
Dale Wyatt, who lives near the park, said that he was asleep around 4 a.m. when his dog Buddha “kept just whimpering and whining. After about a half hour I said, ‘OK, fine, I’ll take you outside, buddy.’ ’’
He said they were walking near the fence of the park when something caught his dog’s nose. “I thought it was a rabbit or something,’’ Wyatt said.
He discovered the man’s body was lying on a walkway close to the park’s tennis courts. “At first I thought it was a joke. I thought it was a mannequin I found,’’ Wyatt said. “. . . He had no head, no nothing above the neck.’’
The man’s body had no burn marks but there was a strong smell of gunpowder, he said. Next to the man was a black container that looked like a discarded container of antifreeze, he said.
Officers came to the scene and determined that “it could be an explosive device’’ and secured the area, Guenther said.
Guenther said officers then went door to door, evacuated residents, and also contacted the Cook County Bomb Squad, which detonated the device found at the scene around 9:30 a.m.
The middle school, 800 Greenleaf St., was closed Tuesday and will likely remain shut Wednesday, police said.
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 said in a written statement that “at this time, there is no indication that [the incident] is school-related.’’

Hey now, there were the muslims who wanted to kill themselves in the NY subway system with bombs using cyanide gas because they were too cowardly to just EAT the cyanide or jump onto the third rail and electrocute themselves...
Such ^$@# we are expected to believe every time.
I looked at the wikipedia on the case. They determined he was involved in the plot based on the plea bargain testimony of one of the participants. And the prosecutor never did try to establish what was “in it” for the guy with the bomb on his neck.
And if he was NOT involved in the plot, then the police would have a “wrongful death” case on their hand because he died with a bomb on his neck that they did nothing to defuse (he sat there for 30 minutes with time ticking only to die right as the bomb squad arrived).
I suspect it is like the anthrax attacks that they were certain were the work of one professor and then were certain were the work of a different professor.
Clear the books and just forget about it.

That’s why I said it was “reported”...
The truth is there isn’t a whole lot anyone in law enforcement can do when I guy has an armored booby trapped bomb strapped around their neck that can go off any second. I can’t blame the police for that. It is just a really bad situation that is very likely to get worse...
