Health insurers are asking for immediate rate hikes of more than 20 percent in Connecticut for some plans, citing rising medical costs and federal health reform laws as reasons.
Both issues the new federal health care reform and rising medical costs are significant drivers of the increases, according to filings by insurers with state regulators that were reviewed by The Courant.

I honestly am thinking of NOT having coverage.
Six of one, half a dozen of the other, I suppose ... [/s]
Some very excellent doctors are changing to a no-insurance practice. The prices are reasonable, and the care is better. If the idea really takes off, I expect the Dems to make it illegal.
My, how surprising and unexpected.
I can just hear the Democrats now... It would have been so much worse...
Watch out health insurers, nobody expects the Kenyan Inquisition.
I’m a healthy, non-smoking 30 year old white man who firmly intends to opt out of health insurance this year.
People forget what the concept of insurance meant to our elders. When insurance products were introduced, they were intended to prevent a family from becoming completely destitute in the event of major illness or accident. The insurance covered costs above and beyond the means of the insured, but the insured was still expected to pay a portion of the bill.
Nowadays, people think, “Oh, I have insurance, I’ll just go to X for Y and it’ll cost me a co-pay.”
No! No! No! Insurance isn’t meant to cover your routine doctor’s office visits! As a matter of fact, if you have a deductible to your plan, you’re likely paying the full amount of your visit to your doctor anyway! Check your explanation of benefits or the bills from the doctors’ offices and you can tell if they wrote off your insurance since you didn’t meet your deductible. If that’s the case, the balance that you owe, along with the co-pay you made during the initial visit, is the cost of the visit overall. (One recent visit for me rang up to just $70, which is a paltry sum for a once a year visit.)
Add on top of that the abuse by the doctor’s offices in upcharging when insurance is involved, and it’s no wonder that health care is expensive.
Revised health care legislation must include tort reform and minimum deductibles in the $1500 - $2000 region, IMO. This crap with $500 deductible... ok, maybe for elderly on fixed income, but if you’re working and responsible with your money, there’s no reason you need insurance for routine doctor visits, etc.
Nice post! I am also going to go out on a limb here and say that prices have gone up to pay for illegals, minorities, and the unemployed. I DONT WANT MY MONEY GOING TO THEM. I have my own family.
A 20% increase in health insurance ought to make CT voters even more angry at the Democrats who passed ObamaCare to reduce health costs!!!!!!!
And he knew exactly what he was doing. He understood that what he did would cause premiums to rise, giving him the perfect cover to demonize someone else for his actions. And since corporation hate and class envy are well established in the minds of many people, it's going to work.
Yes, the abuse of the ER for indigent care is especially egregious since the hospitals usually know full well if the patient can pay, and if not, they charge it to their indigent care pool for twice or three times the actual cost and submit it to state Medicaid. So as illegals, the unemployed (those on Kobra), and uninsured minorities who are abusing our ERs are part of the problem. The other part is exorbitant legal payouts for malpractice and the cost of malpractice insurance. Cap litigation for pain and suffering and move on. I’m tired of people taking advantage of a system that’s produced the most capable and advanced medical establishment in the world.
On page 14276 of the healthcare bill, the Law of Supply and Demand is repealed. That part of the bill has not taken effect yeet.
PLease do us the courtesy of giving the title of that link so we know what it is. I am tired of clicking on it to find out it's the same thing over and over.
No Doubt. I want my insurance but wow! I am changing to a 10k deduct.
I got a 10k deduct while I could.
