I really like the painting, but he’s somewhat inconsistent on his stated positioning of conservative presidents on the right (viewer’s left) side of the ‘Forgotten Man’ and liberals on his left side. For example, why is William McKinley at the far extreme left of the man, on the same side as Clinton and FDR? McNaughton’s comment on McKinley was even positive, on how he presided over a period of prosperity and made gold the base of the currency.
Correction, McNaughton himself didn’t say there were conservative presidents on one side and liberal presidents on the other, the commentator said this. Still, McKinley doesn’t seem to belong where he is placed in the painting.
