At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.
The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.
The fact that it's still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party's own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.
"I looked at that and said, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. "Should it get taken out? Absolutely. Does anybody think we should be arresting homosexual people? If you take that stand, you really probably shouldn't be in the Republican Party."
Gay rights have been rapidly advancing nationwide since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy law in 2003's Lawrence v. Texas decision. Gay marriage is now allowed in five states and Washington, D.C., a federal court recently ruled the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy unconstitutional, and even a conservative tea party group in Montana ousted its president over an anti-gay exchange in Facebook.
But going against the grain is the Montana GOP statement, which falls under the "Crime" section of the GOP platform. It states: "We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal."

I went to school in the 60's-70's, there was no teaching of homosexuality. So what has changed?

BUT, your logic fails as you would ALSO have the Montana GOP support homosexuals in order to get said votes (again, supporting MINORITY positions) there by saying to the "independents" (Which I KNOW you are lying about when you call yourself one at this point) "hey, we're waffling here! We want that coveted "independent" vote by supporting a minority position that goes against the very grain of the majority of the voters by and large in our state!"...

I’m rude for asking where you taught, get real, you can talk about homosexuality in your classroom but you cannot say where you teach or taught not even a district or state.
As for kids raising the issue then you should reply that you’re a teacher and you’re here to teach history etc if you want to talk about that issue then you need to talk to your parents as it is a parents job on issues like that .
That is unless you have an agenda in YOUR CLASSROOM

I get sick when I hear FReepers agreeing with this kind of thing. Do you want a Free Republic (the country) or laws that suit what you like, only? FREEDOM means freedom. People can live the life they want. Not YOUR religion and sexual tastes.
Remember that every sexual act a gay couple performs are performed also by heterosexuals somewhere in the country, even if not by you personally. How would such a law even go into action? Who really wants police going into people’s bedrooms?
I do not know (nor do I want to know) what goes on in YOUR bedroom, and as long as you are consensual adults, I sure do not want the police to come in and take you down for whatever you might be doing. Why do you wish that for your neighbor?

There is no reason why homosexuality should be in the classroom and seeing as this poster said it is the kids raising the issue then the teacher should be saying it is not my job to discuss issues like this I am here to teach history etc,
I have kids in middle and Elementary school and I guarantee if some teacher discussed this subject then all hell would break loose
even if the kid asked this teacher then there is no reason to be talking about it in the classroom in front of the kids to hear
Sex was not shoved down our throats growing up and deviant relations were not embraced, even as the turbulent 60’s were happening...Yes I remember school in the 70’s and kids smoking Cigs or Pot in the bathrooms, but the majority went home, had chores to do:
1. Mow and rake the lawn
2. De-frost the frig
3. Do homework

Our parents did not treat us like glass ornaments, we were expected to behave, do work, study at school and go to work.

But the left is making an issue of it and will try and paint your extremist views indicative of Republicans in general.
And nothing could be further from the truth.
And I am proud to stand up for gays and lesbians.
That doesn’t mean I like the path their leadership would take them.
Thankfully, some homosexuals know there are more important things going on in the world than whether or not gays can marry.
