Kanjorski Finally Set for a Fall?
CNBC ^ | 9/17/10 | Jeff Cox

The third time may well be the proverbial charm for Lou Barletta and his quixotic bid to unseat veteran Democratic Rep. Paul Kanjorski.

Kanjorski, the influential senior Financial Services Committee member and frequent “Squawk Box” guest on CNBC, is fighting nothing less than a legacy-challenging battle to keep his seat.

Kanjorski was instrumental in putting together this year’s financial reform legislation, particularly the areas that addressed the too-big-to-fail institutions that triggered the credit crisis. So his seat is a biggie in terms of the Washington governmental structure.

As a 13-term incumbent representing northeastern Pennsylvania, Kanjorski had been breezing through election after election until Barletta started challenging him in 2002.

Kanjorski pulled out the first race with some breathing room, but barely squeaked by in 2008.

Barletta, the Republican mayor of Hazleton, a 25,000-population burg near the southernmost reaches of Kanjorski’s district, is a darling of the Tea Party right for, among other things, an equally quixotic battle against illegal immigration. Though a district court recently delivered the second setback for a Barletta-sponsored proposal that would have penalized businesses and landlords who accommodate illegal immigrants, his popularity has only been cemented further in the Democrat-heavy district.

If Barletta succeeds, how can his quest be quixotic?

". . . an equally quixotic battle against illegal immigration"

Barletta was fighting the illegal alien invasion even back when it was being supported by McCain, Bush, Rove and the RINOs. When America restores its constitutional government, Barletta and Hazleton will be proved to be the prophet and pathfinders on illegal immigration, along with other towns that took up the battle when no one was on their side - Farmers Branch, Costa Mesa, Herndon VA, Prince William VA.

Kanjorski is one of the most corrupt people in Congress, and that's saying a lot. For years he has shoveled tax moneies to his family members and corrupt businesses and gotten away with it because most of the people in that area of northeastern PA are democrats and don't know how to vote otherwise.

The area has been in a depression since the 1950s and a Republican opposition is non-existent. Pennsylvania has more political patronage jobs than any other state, and if you want a job in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazleton area, like school teacher, or Turnpike worker of county employee you have to pay the political bribe to get it. People joke about getting their political friends to vote for them when they can't make it to the polls, and more dead people vote there than in Chicago.

A Barletta victory would be only a first small step in cleaning out that cesspool.

Your are speaking to the choir. I support Lou completely. I had an opportunity to speak with him in 2008 and participated in a fund raiser for him in DC. He is a great guy and would make an outstanding Congressman.

Hazelton was a leader in America fighting back against illegal immigration. The city is still fighting the legal battles and was just recently handed a setback by an appeals court ruling. I suspect it will go to the Supreme Court. Kris Kobach was involved in the Hazelton law as well as the AZ law.

Herndon is currently battling outside SEIU agitators who are trying to repeal the anti-solicitation ordinance and 287 [g] authority.

My comment had to do with the use of the word quixotic by the author of the piece. Either he doesn't understand the meaning of the word or he believes that Barletta is tilting at windmills in terms of replacing the corrupt Kanjorski.

Nah - neither.
He just learned a new word - quixotic - and wants to show off.

I’ll bet he doesn’t know how to pronounce it.

When my wife was trying to get a teaching job in the early 90's in NEPA, the going rate was $5,000.
