How To Tame The ObamaCare Leviathan
IBD Editorials ^ | September 21, 2010 | GRACE-MARIE TURNER

Opinion polls over the last several weeks show President Obama not only has failed to build public support for his health care overhaul. He is actually losing ground. The percentage of likely voters who want ObamaCare repealed now ranges from a low of 56% to a high of 60%.

If opponents can corral the lowest number in that range, they have a good chance of scuttling this unpopular multitrillion-dollar law before it can wreak havoc with America's health care system and, indeed, its overall economy.

GOP candidates appear on course to take control of the House with an outside chance of winning the Senate. Even if they fall short of reclaiming the upper chamber, they should be able to form an alliance with moderate Democrats to derail many of ObamaCare's most egregious mandates.

To do this, they must realize that voters are worried not just about their jobs and retirement plans, but also whether the quality of their personal health will allow them to enjoy the golden years of leisure after a lifetime of work. To paraphrase James Carville, "It's not just the economy, stupid; it's the overall quality of our lives."

There is ample evidence to show that ObamaCare will cost jobs, raise health care costs and saddle future generations with crippling debt.

Unless both houses (House and Senate) go two-thirds for veto override (unlikely), America is stuck with 0-care. The new agencies alone will cost American taxpayers a sum one can never comprehend. Even if dems are unelected, dems now have Americans by the throat, and Americans are being smothered. Even at 56% to 60% against 0-care, the tide is against America repealing this vile abomination. These facts are regrettable.

Not true.

It's just going to take time. The first thing is get control of the House and don't fund any of it. The second thing is to have at least 40 conservative senators to filibuster anything in the senate. The third thing is pass one law after another stripping out the worst of the provisions (personal mandate) and force the Rats to support an obama veto. If the Pubs do these things we will have a Pub Pres. and Senate by 2012.

In the next 2 years realistic strategies will be:
- De-funding certain aspects of 0-care such as the IRS agents.
- Hearings, hearings and more hearings. Call death panel docs like Zeke Emanuel, Berwick. Call the Stalinst Sebelius regarding free speech restrictions.
- Looking for possible areas of weakness in 0-care. Consider targeting the mandates by expanding the religious exemption. First, this needs clarification. The Amish are clearly a favored group, Muslims may get in an exemption based on Sharia law. Could “Sharing ministries” be a way out? We need a definite answer.

personally, I believe the possible overthrow of 0-care should come at the state's level. This would eliminate the federal mandates, and the eventual strain on the court system would create an eventual repeal....mho

I do realize this is going to take time, but mho is, this cannot be done in the next congress, nor after 2012. The states should take the lead on this one...mho

You have it exactly right. No hand-wringing and whining by the Vichy Republicans that they don't have enough votes to override a veto to repeal it, so they'll just do nothing! With no funds to be appropriated for enforcement, collections or staffing the bureaucracy, the monstrosity simply withers on the vine, or better yet, dies the death of 1000 small cuts.

Remember how Democrats kept good judges like Janice Rogers Brown and Miguel Estrada from being promoted on the bench when they were still the senate minority?

Exactly right, this is trench warfare. The good news is the Tea Party has gotten some good conservatives on the ballots and Sen. DeMint has done the same.
